The movie "Flip Side 8: Vong Tay Nang" by director Ly Hai quickly reached the revenue milestone of 100 billion VND on the evening of May 1.
Ly Hai is always considered a "strange case" in the Vietnamese film industry. Ly Hai used to pursue a singing career, had many hit songs, then switched to filmmaking. Series of films "Flip side" associated with Ly Hai's personal brand.
In each part of “Flip Side”, Ly Hai brings a different dish, there are parts where he pursues the horror and creepy genre such as “Flip Side 4: Nha Co Khach”, there are parts where it is an action and martial arts film such as “Flip Side 5: 48h”, to “Flip Side 6: The Fateful Ticket” which is a story about friendship and betrayal… Most of the parts of “Flip Side” have won big in terms of revenue.
“Lat mat” was launched by Ly Hai in 2015 and has gone through 8 parts so far. Among the “Lat mat” movies - Ly Hai’s own brand, many parts have reached the hundred billion revenue milestone, such as “Lat mat 4” earning 120 billion VND, “Lat mat 5” earning 150 billion VND... and by “Lat mat 7: Mot giau uoc” released in theaters during the April 30-May 1 holiday in 2024, Ly Hai has reached the revenue milestone of 482 billion VND with 13 weeks of showing - the longest-running movie at the box office in 2024. Previously, Tran Thanh’s “Mai” (the highest-grossing Vietnamese movie of all time) stayed in theaters for 11 weeks.
Experts once divided the Vietnamese film market into “Tran Thanh, Ly Hai and the rest”. If Tran Thanh “dominated” the cinema during Tet, Ly Hai dominated during the holiday period of April 30 - May 1.
This year, Ly Hai met a more formidable opponent, director Victor Vu, with the release of “Detective Kien: The Headless Case”. Although released at the same time, in the first days, “Flip Side 8” dominated the screenings. Although criticized for its old theme and old approach, “Flip Side 8: Sunny Arms” still showing Ly Hai's superiority.
As of the night of May 1, “Flip Side 8” has reached the revenue mark of 100 billion VND, while “Detective Kien” is chasing and reaching a revenue of 85 billion VND.
The two films are expected to soon have new revenue figures, surpassing 100 billion VND - continuing the consecutive success of Vietnamese films this year at the box office.
