The inauguration day of US President-elect Donald Trump will take place with many events and the presence of prominent figures.

On January 20, President-elect Donald Trump will be officially inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States. It will be the 60th official presidential inauguration in American history.

According to NBC Chicago, the inauguration ceremony will begin at 12:00 on January 20, Eastern time, or 0:00 on January 21, Vietnam time.

Series of events

The schedule released by the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee shows that President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will hold receptions on January 18. On January 19, Mr. Trump will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, then deliver a victory speech at Capital One Arena in the capital.

January 20 will include a series of events, including a traditional prayer service at St. John’s Church across from the White House, followed by a tea party at the White House with President Joe Biden and his wife.

They will then travel to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony. Due to the weather, the swearing-in ceremony will not take place on the steps of the building but inside. This is the first time since President Ronald Reagan's inauguration in 1985 that the swearing-in ceremony has taken place under the dome of the Capitol building.

After some formalities, opera singer Christopher Macchio will sing the national anthem. Vice President JD Vance will then be sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Following a performance by singer Carrie Underwood, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts will administer the oath of office to President Trump.

Rehearsal for Trump's inauguration in front of the Capitol before the event was moved inside

After being sworn in, Mr. Trump will deliver his inaugural address and receive a blessing from clergy. This will be followed by a formal farewell ceremony for the outgoing president and vice president, and Mr. Biden and Ms. Kamala Harris will leave the Capitol.

Next, Mr. Trump signs nominations, memoranda or executive orders in front of members of Congress. Then, the new president and vice president have lunch inside a hall in the Capitol with the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

will attend a signing ceremony on Capitol Hill, a luncheon of the Joint Congressional Inaugural Committee. The President will review the troops and then march down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Trump was supposed to follow with a traditional parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, but due to bad weather, the event was moved to the 20,000-seat Capital One Arena, where an invitation-only viewing event was held.

The president then returns to the White House for the official signing ceremony in the Oval Office and to speak at White House receptions.

Tradition of Inauguration on January 20

According to the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the president takes office on January 20 after the election. If January 20 falls on a Sunday, the inauguration takes place on January 21. Before the amendment was ratified in 1933, the president took office on March 4.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will officially leave office at 12:00 p.m. on January 20, meaning Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance will officially assume office regardless of whether they are sworn in or not.

Rehearsal for the oath

The president will recite the oath: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Many VIP guests were present

The costs of the events will be raised through fundraising. Any money left over will go toward building Mr. Trump’s future presidential library, according to the AP. Mr. Trump has raised more than $200 million for his inauguration, a record.

The stage was set at the Capitol but the outdoor event was ultimately canceled.

Trump's family, allies, many VIPs and tech billionaires (Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg) will attend the ceremony. All living former presidents will be present, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. According to AFP, the new US leader usually does not invite foreign leaders to the inauguration ceremony, but Trump has broken the rule by inviting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Argentine President Javier Milei and ChinesePresident Xi Jinping. China announced that Vice President Han Zheng will attend the ceremony.

Notably, this will be the first presidential inauguration where the American flag is flown at half-staff. The reason is that President Biden issued a regulation on December 29, 2024, to fly flags at half-staff across the country in memory of the late President Jimmy Carter. The regulation lasts 30 days from the date of Mr. Carter's death and Mr. Trump can only reverse the decision after taking office.

Trump's 2017 inauguration

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies distributes a limited number of tickets (more than 220,000) to the public through members of Congress. Tickets are free and allow ticket holders to go to the Capitol to watch the president and vice president take the oath of office.

Those without tickets can still go to the National Mall to watch on large screens. The public can see the president's silhouette as he marches down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House.

However, the above outdoor events were all canceled due to weather. On January 21, President Trump will attend a traditional prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral.
