Liverpool have officially completed the blockbuster deal with Alexander Isak from Newcastle for a fee of up to £125 million on the final day of the 2025 summer transfer window.

Closing the days of tense negotiations for the Alexander Isak deal

This sensational deal ended a series of extremely tense negotiations, which at times seemed to have reached a complete deadlock between Liverpool and Newcastle.

Alexander Isak signs six-year contract with Liverpool

The crux of the matter was the Swedish star's release clause. It was only when Liverpool agreed to pay the full £125m, combined with Isak putting pressure on him by skipping training and matches and declaring he would no longer maintain his relationship with Newcastle, that things were resolved.

The deal signed between the parties is worth £125 million, bringing Alexander Isak to play for Liverpool for six years and making the Swedish striker the most expensive player in English football. In the summer of 2023, Chelsea had to pay Brighton a huge £115 million to own Moises Caicedo, creating a transfer record in English football at that time. Most recently, Liverpool had to spend £116 million to bring Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen.

Alexander Isak not thanked by Newcastle

Isak will wear the number 9 shirt at Anfield. At his new team presentation, Isak shared: "It's been a long journey for me to come to Liverpool. I'm proud and excited to be a part of this club and everything it stands for. I want to win all the trophies with Liverpool."

Liverpool welcomed their new signing with a grand welcome video , in contrast to Newcastle's silence. The North East English team only released a 37-word announcement, confirming the sale of Isak without any thanks or gratitude for the player. The announcement on the team's homepage read: "Newcastle can confirm the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British record fee. The Swedish striker joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 and has made 109 appearances in all competitions."

Liverpool made a £110m bid with add-ons in August, but Newcastle immediately rejected the offer as it fell far short of their asking price of £150m. The story has come to a head in recent weeks, with Isak insisting on leaving, missing the opening games of the season and stating bluntly: "This relationship cannot continue."

Joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in August 2022 for £63 million, Isak has made a strong impression in the "Magpies" shirt with 62 goals in 109 matches. Last season alone, Isak scored 23 goals in the Premier League and helped Newcastle defeat Liverpool in the League Cup final, winning their first domestic title in 70 years.

Newcastle replace Alexander Isak with "pole" from Germany

To replace Isak, Newcastle immediately broke their own transfer record by signing young striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for £69 million. The 1.98m tall 23-year-old player is nicknamed "Woltemessi" for his skillful technique despite his giant physique.

He scored 17 goals in 33 Bundesliga games and was the top scorer at the European Under-21 Championship. Woltemade signed a six-year contract with Newcastle, expected to become a long-term leader of the attack.

Not stopping there, the Magpies also spent £55 million to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford. The 28-year-old Congolese striker scored 19 goals last season and promises to add experience and courage to Newcastle's attack after losing Isak.

Liverpool closed the 2025 summer transfer window with a bang. In addition to Isak and Wirtz, coach Arne Slot also welcomed a series of quality new recruits such as Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Giovanni Leoni and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. The total spending of the "Red Brigade" reached 446 million pounds - the largest number in the club's history.

The deal to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace seemed to be complete but collapsed at the last minute when coach Oliver Glasner insisted on keeping the key centre-back. However, Liverpool are still confident of recruiting Guehi in January 2026 or next summer, when Guehi's contract at Palace expires and he becomes a free agent.
