The "Vietnam IT Market Report 2023" recently released by TopDev shows that although salaries and bonuses in the information technology (IT) industry continue to increase, they are still not enough to attract enough human resources. The market is currently still short of 150,000-200,000 programmers and engineers every year.
Currently, the current number of programmers in Vietnam is only about 530,000 people. In terms of trends, the number of IT students enrolling each year is about 50,000-57,000 people.
Of the more than 57,000 technology engineers entering the labor market each year, only about 30% of the workforce meets the skills, expertise, and practical requirements set by businesses.
The remaining 70% need to be arranged for additional training at the enterprise for 3-6 months to get familiar with the job and working environment.
According to assessments, Vietnamese workers have the ability to quickly absorb theory but are limited in practical skills in applying high technology.

Due to the impact of the global economy , labor costs will be optimized first to ensure financial stability for businesses. Therefore, IT salaries in 2023 will not change much compared to before.
However, compared to other industries, IT-related positions all have higher incomes.
According to the data, most IT professionals start their careers with salaries that are not too different. But after the first 2 years, the salary model will go in a different direction, related to technology and can be greatly influenced by the job market, economic situation and emerging business requirements.
In general, most of the basic technology groups like Java, Python, .Net... have been paid consistently high salaries over the years.
New high-tech skills related to artificial intelligence, cloud computing... are being invested in more, receiving higher salaries due to the huge impact of today's real- world applications and modern software development processes.
Specifically, the salary for an intern in the software IT field is 3-5 million VND/month. With 1-3 years of experience, software IT personnel are paid 15-30 million VND/month, and with over 5 years of experience, it is 30-50 million VND/month.
In management positions, the salary of a technology director at a business is also very high, ranging from 60-142 million VND/month.
According to statistics, more than 70% of new entrants have a salary of 14-24 million VND/month. Nearly 50% of mid-level employees have a salary ranging from 27-36 million VND/month. Meanwhile, the salary of senior employees is mainly around 30-50 million VND/month and only about 10% can receive a salary of 50 million VND or more.
Vietnam needs to add 1 million workers in the technology industry.
At the forum "Building high-quality young human resources to meet the 4.0 era", Minister of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung said that the Party Central Committee Secretariat has issued a directive on strengthening training of Vietnamese human resources, focusing on vocational education to meet the requirements of the new period.
The Government also issued Resolution 06 on building a flexible, sustainable, integrated and effective labor market.
Besides mass skills training, Mr. Dao Ngoc Dung expressed the need to pay attention to infrastructure issues and breakthroughs in high-quality human resources.
"In my opinion, Vietnam is lacking about 1 million workers in the technology sector. This is an issue that needs to be addressed very quickly, because if you want to go fast, you have to train people," the Minister emphasized.
