In an interview last night (January 7), President of the Football Association of Thailand Nualphan Lamsam (also known as Madam Pang) said he intended to invite the Vietnamese team to participate in the King's Cup 2025. This is an annual friendly tournament with tradition and important meaning for Thai fans.
The Football Association of Thailand usually invites opponents from many continents, ranked in the top 100 on the FIFA rankings and a team from Southeast Asia - usually the most recent AFF Cup champion. The Vietnamese team has participated in the tournament twice in 2006 and 2019, both times reaching the final and finishing second overall.
Vietnam team may play Thailand in King's Cup.
Most recently, in 2019, the Vietnamese team was invited to participate in the King's Cup as the reigning AFF Cup champions. Coach Park Hang Seo and his team defeated host Thailand 1-0, then lost to Curacao on penalties in the final. Immediately after the defeat to the Vietnamese team at home, the interim coach of the Thai team, Sirisak Yodyadthai, resigned.
The Vietnamese team has met Thailand 3 times in just over 3 months. Coach Kim Sang-sik and his players lost in a friendly match in September 2024 at My Dinh Stadium. At the AFF Cup 2024, the Vietnamese team beat Thailand in both finals to win the championship.
Mr. Kim Sang-sik is the first coach to help the Vietnamese team win against Thailand twice during his tenure. This is also the first time the Vietnamese team has defeated this rival in two consecutive matches.
