NATO has once again deployed AWACS (Airborne Early Warning and Control System) aircraft to Polish airspace to monitor the skies over Ukraine, the UK Defense Journal reported on June 30.
According to the British newspaper, NATO said the deployment of AWACS aircraft shows the alliance's increased presence in the region and monitors Moscow's military activities in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict in Eastern Europe.
“Officially, any intelligence gathered is only sent to NATO countries, but it is well known that some of these countries quickly share information with Ukraine, allowing them to counter any impending attacks. Western intelligence gives Ukraine the ability to react a little faster,” a former Royal Air Force (RAF) officer who wished to remain anonymous told the UK Defense Journal.

In May, the Kyiv Post reported on the deployment of NATO AWACS E-3A Sentry “Eye of God” aircraft in the airspace of Romania, another neighboring country of Ukraine in Southeast Europe.
A similar AWACS deployment took place last year, with then-NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu speaking of NATO's determination to “defend every inch of Allied territory”.
“Our AWACS can detect aircraft hundreds of kilometres away, making them a vital capability in NATO’s defence and deterrence posture,” said Lungescu.
In response to Russia's "special military operation" in Ukraine, NATO has increased its air presence in Eastern Europe by adding fighter jets and surveillance aircraft to the airspace of member states on its eastern flank that share a border with Ukraine.
Since February 2022, NATO AWACS has been conducting regular patrols in Eastern Europe and the Baltic Sea region to monitor Russian fighter jets near NATO borders.
