However, the habit of sleeping next to your phone can be harmful to your health. A survey showed that many Britons admitted to sleeping with their phones, with 74% of participants saying they could not keep their phones out of reach when sleeping.

The dangers of cell phone use are multi-faceted. First, the blue light emitted by mobile devices can trick the brain into thinking it’s time to wake up, thus reducing the quality of sleep. There’s also the unhygienic aspect of leaving your phone in bed—a scientific aspect worth considering.

Furthermore, although cell phones emit low levels of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and there is no clear evidence of negative biological effects from them, many people are concerned about long-term health risks.

To mitigate these concerns, some people choose to use wired headphones instead of Bluetooth headphones and regularly turn on airplane mode when not using their phones. These measures can help protect users' health in an increasingly technological landscape.

Two things to do if you sleep next to your phone every night

Dr. Brian S. Boxer Wachler, a renowned expert in ophthalmology and other eye care efforts from the Boxer Wachler Vision Institute in Beverly Hills, recently shared ways for people to minimize the effects of EMF when sleeping near their phones. He emphasized that: “If you sleep with your phone next to you and are concerned about the effects of EMF, especially on children, you should consider using a Faraday bag.”

Faraday bags are a type of box designed to minimize the effects of electromagnetic fields, usually made of conductive material. They are often used to protect credit cards and car keys from being stolen. Dr. Wachler also noted that turning on airplane mode on your phone does not completely block electromagnetic radiation like a Faraday bag does.

Additionally, he offers a simple solution if users don't want to buy a Faraday bag: turn off your phone.

After Dr. Wachler's advice was posted, many people commented that "this advice is for 5G phones but is still very useful," while others advised "just keep it as far away as possible."
