Heavy rain disrupts many sporting events at the Olympics

The opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics was also hit by heavy rain on Friday, as thousands of athletes paraded by boat on the Seine.

Rain continued to fall on Saturday, forcing some events to be postponed and umbrellas were used more than sunglasses at a beach volleyball match at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

"The risk factor becomes too high when skateboarding in the rain," a World Skate spokesman said after Saturday's competition was postponed.

The opening day of the tennis tournament was also disrupted by matches on uncovered courts to the disappointment of thousands of spectators.

However, the Paris 2024 Olympic Organizing Committee said it was confident the triathlon events would go ahead as scheduled on Tuesday, although rain could cause Sunday's practice session to be cancelled due to concerns about water quality in the River Seine.

Meteo France, France's official weather forecasting agency, predicts dry weather on Sunday, before becoming very hot next week, with temperatures peaking at 36 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
