Musk will replace fired civil servants with machines

(CLO) Billionaire Elon Musk is implementing a plan to cut tens of thousands of government employees and replace them with artificial intelligence (AI), according to US officials.

More than 40,000 federal employees have accepted eight months of paid resignations, while Musk aims to cut at least 10% of the federal workforce.

The Department of Government Efficiency led by billionaire Musk, known as DOGE, is actively looking for technology to replace humans, with the goal of automating as much as possible.

“Anything that can be automated by machines will be done. Technocrats will replace bureaucrats,” said an unnamed official.

DOGE associates have been collecting vast amounts of internal data to assess which jobs could be taken over by AI or robots. Musk has said he wants to rebuild the federal government from the ground up and eliminate what he sees as inefficiencies. Some agencies and departments could be cut by as much as 60%, according to insiders.

In just three weeks, DOGE has cut more than $1 billion in spending. Musk’s teams are targeting major programs, especially in healthcare, to reduce waste. DOGE is also partnering with the General Services Administration (GSA) to eliminate unnecessary real estate leases.

Some of the significant cuts include $30 million from digital modernization projects and at least $4 million from eliminating underused offices, the Wall Street Journal reported.

AI has already begun to be deployed to analyze the US Department of Education 's financial data to identify contracts that could be canceled. Thomas Shedd, a former Tesla engineer who now works for the US government, held a meeting on February 3 to plan a more extensive AI deployment.

DOGE was given special access to government data, allowing for mass editing with little oversight. Some IT staff raised privacy concerns, but senior executives caved to DOGE's demands.

Under Musk’s new workforce plan, new hires and poor performers will be the first to be laid off. The plan mirrors Musk’s decision to cut Twitter’s workforce by more than 75% after its 2022 acquisition, as well as the massive cuts at Tesla.

Musk's ultimate goal is a smaller government that oversees businesses less, provides fewer services, and accounts for a smaller share of the US economy .
