According to the Syrian Ministry of Culture, the Al-Rahba fortress located along the Euphrates River and dating back to the 9th century was attacked.
US airstrikes have caused cracks in the walls of this fortress, raising concerns about the negative impact on Syria's important cultural heritage.
Earlier, on the night of February 2, the US conducted airstrikes on armed groups in Iraq and Syria in retaliation for a drone attack on a US base in Jordan on January 28, which killed three US soldiers.
The United States launched airstrikes against militant groups in Iraq and Syria on the night of February 2 in retaliation for a drone attack on a US base in Jordan on January 28 that killed three US soldiers. The US Central Command said the country had carried out airstrikes against 85 targets in Iraq and Syria. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed that the attacks were successful and hit their targets.
However, the damage to Al-Rahba Fortress in the recent US attack has sparked controversy and criticism from Syria. The Syrian Ministry of Culture has spoken out in defense of the country's cultural heritage and called for respect and protection of important historical sites such as Al-Rahba Fortress.
Al-Rahba Fortress, also known as Qal'at al-Rahba, is of immense historical significance. Standing on a 244-metre (801 ft) high hill, Al-Rahba occupies a strategic position overlooking the Syrian desert. However, the ravages of time and wind erosion have left it almost completely in ruins.
