Na Son actively prevents forest fires in the dry season

Faced with the increasing risk of forest fires in the 2025-2026 dry season, Na Son commune (Dien Bien province) has deployed many synchronous solutions to proactively prevent, effectively respond, and protect more than 6,500 hectares of forest in the area.

In the early days of the dry season, on the mountain slopes of Na Son commune, loudspeakers regularly broadcast propaganda messages: "Do not burn fields on hot, windy days; when discovering a forest fire, immediately report it to the village chief or commune authorities."

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam - Vice Chairman of Na Son Commune People's Committee, the dissemination and popularization of regulations on forest protection and fire prevention and control were deployed early and widely from the beginning of October 2025.

“The whole commune has 23,072 hectares of natural area, of which more than 6,509 hectares are forest. We have developed specific fire prevention and control plans for each village, assigning forces to be on duty 24/7 during the peak period from November 2025 to April 2026. The goal is to prevent large fires and minimize damage to forest resources,” Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam added.

According to the plan, the commune organizes patrols and inspections at least twice a week at high-risk locations; regularly updates fire warnings on the Forest Protection Department's system. Villages in the area have simultaneously signed a commitment to protect forests and prevent forest fires between households and village chiefs, and between village chiefs and the commune People's Committee, creating unity in action.

Mr. Lo Van Hanh - Head of Huoi Hoc village shared that in the past, some households burned fields close to the forest, posing a risk of fire spreading. Now, thanks to propaganda and signing commitments, people have proactively cleared vegetation, created firebreaks, and no longer burned indiscriminately like before. For many years now, there have been no more forest fires in the village when the dry season comes. The forests of the village have become green again.

Currently, the whole commune has more than 20 community forest protection teams that regularly patrol and detect fire risks early. Fire prevention work is closely linked to livelihood development - each household that receives forest contracts receives payments for forest environmental services, helping people have a stable source of income.

Ms. Lo Thi Panh, a resident of Na Son 1 village, said: “My family was contracted nearly 5 hectares of protective forest. Every year, the forest environmental service fee is about 4 million VND. Not much but enough to encourage me, to make me see that protecting the forest is also a way to make money .”

Not only the government and people, but also the Forest Rangers, Police and Commune Militia were mobilized in forest protection teams. All units were fully equipped with firefighting equipment and tools according to the “4 on-site” principle: on-site command, on-site forces, on-site equipment and on-site logistics.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Truong - Head of Dien Bien Dong Forest Protection Department said: We regularly coordinate with the commune police and militia to inspect hot spots, strictly handle acts of deforestation and burning forests for farming. If we discover any person intentionally causing fires, we will resolutely prosecute them according to regulations.

Forest fire response drills and training, search and rescue are also held annually, helping local forces be more proactive in handling situations, minimizing damage when incidents occur.

In parallel with the task of forest fire prevention, Na Son commune continues to review, regenerate and plant new forests according to the province's targets; at the same time, put unallocated forest areas under management, protection and enjoy the policy of payment for forest environmental services, contributing to stabilizing people's lives and creating jobs.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, forest management, protection and fire prevention work will only be effective when every person is aware that forests are the common property of the community.

“Na Son strives to not have any serious forest fires this year, maintain forest cover, contribute to protecting the ecological environment and developing a sustainable economy,” Mr. Lam affirmed.
