France is the largest tourist market to Hue in 2024 with more than 68,000 arrivals (accounting for 11%); Taiwan ranks second with more than 58,000 arrivals and the US ranks third with more than 54,000 arrivals. In fact, France is a traditional tourist market, while Taiwan (China) is an emerging tourist market from 2023 to present.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism "picture" has changed a lot, due to fluctuations in the world and the influence of economic , cultural, social factors and tourism development policies. Looking at the development of the number of visitors to Hue in 2024, it can be seen that the top 10 tourist markets mostly increased the number of visitors to Hue compared to 2023, specifically Italian visitors increased by 114%; Spain increased by 62%; France increased by 57%, Germany increased by 54%... However, there are also some markets showing signs of decrease compared to 2023, such as Thai visitors decreased by 52%, Malaysia decreased by 46%... The Japanese and Korean tourist markets outside the top 10 visitors to Hue have decreased significantly compared to recent years.

A representative of the Department of Tourism Planning and Development said that each tourist market has different desires and experience requirements. Typically, in the traditional market, tourists from Korea and Japan often prioritize combined tours to the Central region (Hue - Da Nang - Hoi An) with an average stay of about 4 - 5 days. They are interested in history, traditional cultural experiences and royal cuisine. This segment often chooses 3 - 4 star hotels, stable quality services and package tours with Korean or Japanese speaking guides. Meanwhile, European tourists often have longer stays and often combine cross-Vietnam tours. They focus on heritage tourism products, and tend to explore deeper, such as: visiting traditional craft villages, eco-tourism in rural areas near the city. For American tourists, although the number of visitors from this market is not as large as many European countries, they have high spending levels and require professional services.

Potential markets (Southeast Asia, China, India) also have different requirements.

According to tourism experts, each market segment has clear differences in travel motivation, service needs and spending levels. International visitors are often interested in cultural, historical and heritage experiences with high service quality requirements, while domestic visitors often focus on reasonable costs, short visit times and close-knit culinary and entertainment activities. This raises the need to optimize tourism products so that Hue tourism can meet each market segment, while maintaining a balance between service quality and price.

Invest to attract customers

With its existing advantages and potentials, Hue tourism has a lot of potential to take the lead in tourism trends in 2025 and new tourism trends in the world by 2030. Director of the Department of Tourism Tran Thi Hoai Tram said that Hue City will focus on groups of breakthrough mechanisms and policies specific to tourism development, focusing on synchronizing policies on: Tourism planning, tourism infrastructure investment, building unique and distinctive tourism products, promoting tourism, human resources and applying information technology and creative technology in tourism management and operation. In addition, it will upgrade and complete infrastructure serving tourism. Prioritize opening domestic and international routes to increase accessibility to tourists and diversify markets, focusing on solutions to increase domestic flight destinations; connecting key international routes such as Bangkok, Korea, Taiwan (China), Singapore, etc.

The tourism industry will focus on perfecting tourism products in the direction of diversifying products, suitable for the market, new trends but still ensuring the brand of Hue tourism. In particular, it will work with businesses to build tourism products besides culture - tourism such as health care tourism, spiritual tourism, MICE tourism, resorts, experiential tourism, golf tourism... The product development is based on the process of researching and surveying market segments, focusing on traditional, key markets and potential markets for tourism in the Ancient Capital.
