To improve the service capacity of the main canals, the management and operation unit has regularly invested in repairing, dredging, and clearing the flow. The main irrigation canal of Nhu Trac pumping station is responsible for irrigating about 4,000 hectares of rice fields in the two districts of Binh Luc and Ly Nhan. The entire Nhu Trac irrigation canal has been paved with concrete slabs, but over time many sections have deteriorated, especially the rather weak banks.
During the prolonged heavy rains caused by storm No. 3 in September 2024, some sections of the canal bank adjacent to the ponds and lagoons on the outside were eroded. Ha Nam Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited (KTCTTL) invested 2.5 billion VND to immediately repair and reinforce the landslide points of the canal slope, helping to ensure safety during irrigation operations for the crop season. Mr. Pham Xuan Thanh, Head of the Nhu Trac Canal Management Team (Ha Nam KTCTTL Company Limited) said: The service area of the canal is large, so ensuring operational capacity during operation is very important. The timely investment in repairs helps maximize irrigation capacity for the crop season. In the spring crop of 2025, the main irrigation canal of Nhu Trac operated 3 irrigation periods, especially the water intake period at the beginning of the season (lasting more than 20 days) which was still safe.
Along with Nhu Trac canal, many main canals have been dredged and repaired during the 2024 - 2025 dry season irrigation. Typically, CT9 canal in Binh Luc district was dredged with more than 7,100m3 of soil, BH8 - A10 canal (Thanh Liem) was dredged with 3,203m3, I4-8-9 canal (Duy Tien) was dredged with 4,742m3, A3-4-6 canal (Kim Bang) was dredged with nearly 2,000m3... In Duy Tien town alone, 13 main canals have been dredged in industrial parks and developed urban areas, with a total volume of nearly 26,000m3 of soil. The main canals dredged this time are mainly the main canals of the main pumping stations.
According to Mr. Kieu Viet Hung, Director of Duy Tien Irrigation Enterprise (Ha Nam Irrigation and Water Supply One Member Co., Ltd.), due to the locality having many industrial parks and urban areas, the drainage coefficient of the irrigation system is required to be high. The enterprise regularly reviews and evaluates the service capacity of each canal to propose dredging and repair to the company. The system of key pumping stations has been upgraded and built, and the capacity of the canals has been improved to help ensure drainage for industrial parks and urban areas in the area.
In general, during the recent irrigation work, Ha Nam KTCTTL One Member Co., Ltd. repaired and dredged more than 40 main irrigation canals, with a volume of excavated soil of more than 100,000 m3. At the same time, the canals were regularly cleared of duckweed and garbage to clear the flow. Mr. Le Van Hoa, Director of Ha Nam KTCTTL One Member Co., Ltd. said: Compared to current requirements, the irrigation and drainage coefficients of irrigation works in the province still do not meet the requirements (irrigation coefficient 1.25 l/s/ha, drainage from 4.5 - 6.5 l/s/ha). Many canals, especially drainage canals built a long time ago, made of old earthen canals, have not been dredged. The unit is trying to review, evaluate, and select important main canals to repair and dredge to meet service capacity.
In fact, the irrigation and drainage canal system of the province is still limited and cannot fully meet the service capacity. Previously built canals were built to serve agricultural production with low service coefficients, but now they must also take on the responsibility of draining water for industrial zones and urban areas requiring high coefficients. Many main canals have been divided (due to the impact of traffic, urban and industrial park development)...
In some areas, there is no synchronization and unity between the main canals managed by the irrigation company and the agricultural service cooperatives, leading to a situation where when there is heavy rain, the water in the main canal is low but the water in the fields is still high. Another problem is that the irrigation fee compensation has not increased for more than 10 years, while electricity, labor and other costs have increased. Therefore, the budget for repairing and dredging canals is limited, affecting the service capacity of irrigation works in general...
In the new development stage, the service requirements of the irrigation system are increasingly high. In particular, the frequency of unusual rains with high intensity in a short period of time is increasing. Therefore, the improvement of the capacity of the main canals needs to be invested more. Thereby, contributing significantly to the development of agricultural production, industry and urban areas in the province.
