Enhance the role of supporting industry, becoming a strategic industry of the economy

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in the coming time, the Ministry will coordinate with businesses and localities to promote and enhance the role of supporting industries, so that this sector will not only be ancillary as it is now, but will develop into a foundational industry, a strategic industry of the economy.

Businesses want to try their hand in fields with high technical requirements

After more than 8 years of implementation, the supporting industry development program has developed in both quantity and quality, with sufficient capacity to directly supply multinational corporations, gradually participating deeply in the global supply chain. However, the new context poses new demands and requirements for the supporting industry, which will need more appropriate orientations and solutions in the coming period.

Currently, Vietnam has about 6,000 supporting industry enterprises, mainly operating in the fields of mechanics, electronics, textiles, footwear... In particular, about 100 Vietnamese enterprises have risen to become tier 1 suppliers for multinational corporations, and about 700 units are tier 2 and tier 3 suppliers.

Ms. Bui Thi Hong Hanh, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Supporting Industry Enterprises, Director of NC Network Vietnam Company, said that enterprises themselves have been more proactive in setting specific challenges, problems and goals for themselves. That is to make quality products to supply to any field.

“However, the common limitation of supporting industry enterprises is still limited raw materials. There are some enterprises that can completely make high quality and value-added products, but they still lack processes, factory systems and, importantly, raw material sources,” said Ms. Hanh.

Affirming that any product chain or any product in any market needs the presence of supporting industrial enterprises, Mr. Vu Dang Khoa, Deputy General Director of JK Industrial Joint Stock Company, said that when enterprises become links in the supply chain, they will easily shift according to market requirements.

“To become one of the enterprises in the global supply chain, it is necessary for enterprises to start from the first step, which is to conquer the domestic market. Many supporting industrial enterprises that are already successful are eager to try their hand in a number of other industrial fields, in a very specific strategy from the next 5 to 10 years, by investing in technology content in products with higher technical requirements, for example, related to the field of aircraft manufacturing”, Deputy General Director of JK Industrial Joint Stock Company Vu ​​Dang Khoa proposed.

Set goals for product cluster production, proactive technology

The solution for supporting industry enterprises to develop, Mr. Vu Dang Khoa said, is that enterprises can completely become one of the suppliers in the supply chain. Accordingly, enterprises need to set the goal of producing export product clusters, in which the cluster will be related to mechanical, plastic or rubber production... When forming a product cluster, enterprises will reduce production costs, and can completely be proactive in technology in Vietnam.

As a locality actively attracting investment in the field of supporting industry development, Ms. Do Viet Hong, Head of the Department of Industrial Management (Department of Industry and Trade of Da Nang City) said that the City is focusing on a number of key and strong areas such as mechanical production, manufacturing, processing of components, metals and spare parts for automobiles, motorbikes, auto parts, small equipment, small industry as well as processing of microchips, technical components, auxiliary products for assembling electronic equipment and a number of areas of raw material production serving the textile and footwear industries.

In the coming time, Da Nang will focus on the manufacturing and processing industry, which is currently the strength of the city's supporting industry. In addition, it will increase linkages and prioritize attracting production in areas such as processing technological components for the automatic engine and automation industries.

“In practice, there are businesses in Da Nang that have produced aerospace equipment, electronic equipment and equipment for industry and information technology. Da Nang has its own concentrated information technology park, so attracting investment in the fields of manufacturing industry as well as designing and manufacturing electronic components is very advantageous,” Ms. Do Viet Hong affirmed.

According to Ms. Hong, with the existing strengths and the orientation of adjusting Da Nang's industrial planning, including planning specific fields of supporting industry, in the coming time, the City will take steps to ensure Da Nang's growth target reaches double digits.

According to Mr. Pham Van Quan, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), the Ministry is drafting the Law on Key Industries, in which supporting industries are considered one of the five key industrial groups. Besides new materials and chemical industries, the Ministry will promote the role of supporting industries - not just as ancillary as it is now, but will develop into a foundational industry, a strategic industry of the economy.

“The Ministry of Industry and Trade will quickly issue Circulars and Decrees to guide the level of "clearness", accessibility and always update the needs of supporting industry enterprises, while ensuring the rapid development of supporting industry, adapting to market needs,” affirmed Deputy Director of the Department of Industry Pham Van Quan.
