Seventy-five fires broke out across Australia's New South Wales (NSW) state on October 1, as heatwaves and strong winds returned to batter the state.
NSW Rural Fire Service has urged locals to be vigilant about fire risks and follow fire regulations as many parts of the state recorded daily highs of over 30C, with temperatures approaching 39C at one point. More than 800 firefighters and specialists have been deployed to help fight the blazes. A total fire ban remains in place in nine areas.
Previously, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a fire risk warning in NSW on October 1, due to hot, dry, windy weather and temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. According to the agency's forecast, temperatures will begin to drop from the night of October 1 and the weather will become cooler on October 2. It is known that October 1 is also the official start of the 2023-2024 bushfire season, in which most areas in NSW enter a high bushfire risk phase. The bushfire season will last until March 31, 2024.
There were more than 2,000 fires in NSW in September, with state officials warning residents to be extra vigilant this year as many may have let their guard down after years of wet weather and flooding.
