Russia comments on meeting between President Putin and Chinese President

On October 17, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova affirmed that the meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping plays an increasingly important role, in the context of current geopolitical challenges.

“Such talks (between the two leaders)... are becoming increasingly important in the context of a rapidly changing geopolitical situation and contribute to strengthening the quality of bilateral relations,” spokeswoman Zakharova said.

According to Ms. Zakharova, any contact between the two leaders is an opportunity to discuss cooperation, as well as review the progress of implementing bilateral agreements.

Earlier that day, Mr. Putin visited China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. The Russian leader is expected to stay in Beijing for two days, October 17-18. According to the plan, on October 17, President Putin will mainly focus on bilateral meetings with representatives of countries participating in the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation such as Thailand, Mongolia, Laos, etc.

Notably, Mr. Putin will attend the official meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan with heads of delegations attending the forum on October 17.

The main events of the forum will take place on October 18 at the Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square. Also on October 18, Russia-China talks will take place, after which President Putin will attend a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the forum.
