Russia attacks eastern Ukraine, Kiev responds with attack on Moscow's key oil refinery

A storage tank at the Kirishinefteorgsintez (KINEF) oil refinery, one of the country's largest, was damaged by debris falling during a Ukrainian drone attack on the morning of March 8, said Alexander Drozdenko, governor of Russia's northwestern Leningrad region.

Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery is one of Russia's two leading oil refineries.

Surgutneftegaz's KINEF refinery is one of Russia's top two oil refineries. According to industry sources, it processes about 17.7 million tonnes of Russian crude oil per year (355,000 barrels per day), accounting for 6.4% of the country's total output.

On his Telegram page, Governor Drozdenko wrote: "Air defense shot down one drone while approaching, the other was destroyed right in the airspace of the plant."

“When the debris fell, the outer structure of one of the tanks was damaged,” he said. No one was injured in the incident, Drozdenko said.

According to industry sources, the plant produces about 2.3 million tons of gasoline, accounting for 5.3% of Russia's total output.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian emergency services announced that at least 11 people were killed and 30 injured in Russian attacks in the Ukrainian-controlled area of ​​Donetsk on the evening of March 7, up from the previously reported four deaths.

"In the evening, Russian troops attacked the center of Dobropillia. At least 11 people were killed and 30 others were injured," the agency said on its Telegram page. It added that at least nine buildings were damaged.
