On May 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi witnessed the signing of an agreement to build a railway line from Rasht (Russia) to Astara (Iran). The signing ceremony was held via online video .
According to Tass, the Russian leader thanked the Iranian president for his personal participation in the project. President Putin considered this an important event for the transport infrastructure between the two countries, the region and the world. The document was signed by Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev and Iranian Road and Urban Development Minister Mehrdad Bazrpash in Tehran. According to this document, Moscow and Tehran will jointly finance the design, construction as well as the supply of goods and services. About 170km long, the Rasht - Astara line is designed to link the land sections of the international North - South Transport Corridor, helping to increase the economic efficiency of the Trans-Caspian route. According to Iranian estimates, the construction of the Rasht - Astara section will take 4 years at an estimated cost of 1.6 billion USD.
