First impressions of journalism
Most journalism students begin their education with a positive image of journalism. In their eyes, journalists are dynamic, sharp, well-traveled, knowledgeable people who are always present at the "hot spots" of society.
Pham Nhu Ngoc, a first-year student in Journalism class K22, shared: Since I was a child, I have always watched TV programs, especially news bulletins. I really admire MCs and reporters when they convey information clearly, attractively and convincingly. I am especially impressed by the image of reporters holding microphones standing in the middle of storms or explosions to report on events.
At that time, I found journalism to be a challenging but also very interesting job. That feeling made me yearn to be in that position, working in a dynamic, creative environment and having a great influence on society. Therefore, when I was at the threshold of university, I decided to choose journalism. - Pham Nhu Ngoc

For Bui Nam Duong, a first-year student in Journalism class K22, his passion for journalism was sparked in high school. Duong said: At that time, I thought journalism was a job that allowed me to “fly around”, “go here and there”, explore new lands and meet many interesting people. But the more I learned, the more I realized that behind the news and reports was the tireless dedication of journalists to fight for truth and justice. This profession is not only interesting but also carries a great responsibility to society.
It can be seen that for many young people, journalism is a dynamic, challenging profession that always requires agility and flexibility. That is what makes this profession attractive, especially for those who love to explore and are not afraid to take risks. Those initial images have partly created motivation and career confidence for students from the first days of entering the lecture hall.
From the classroom to the field
In university, journalism students are exposed to specialized subjects such as: Theoretical basis of journalism, types of journalism, interviewing skills, photography techniques... The lessons not only convey theory but also require a lot of practice, such as: Writing news, recording events, interviewing, filming, writing reflective articles... When actually working, students realize that journalism is not as glamorous as imagined.

Hoang Nhat Mai, a fourth-year student in Journalism class K19, shared: When studying specialized subjects, we are often assigned assignments to produce press products. During the process, we encountered many difficulties, from choosing topics, interviewing characters, collecting information to how to present the article in a logical, attractive and authentic way. There were times when, in order to film on time, we had to leave home at dawn, and had to make many appointments to interview the characters.
Through that experience, I realized that journalism is very hard work. Journalists not only need to be skillful, quick, and accurate, but also have to endure great pressure, always race against time, and follow every little corner of life to promptly bring authentic and valuable stories to readers. - Hoang Nhat Mai
During their studies, students also have the opportunity to intern at press agencies. Through these internships, students are immersed in a professional journalism environment and gain a better understanding of the profession.

Talking about a time when she was actually at the headquarters of Vietnam Television in early 2024, Dong Ngoc Linh, a third-year student in the Journalism class K20, shared: At that time, we were able to participate as audience members in the studio of the program 12 Zodiacs. When witnessing the work of the seniors, I could clearly feel the hardship and pressure in the work of a television reporter. Many scenes had to be filmed over and over again to ensure the best quality when broadcast. Although it was so hard, those experiences made me love the profession I chose even more.

Through these practical experiences, journalism students not only accumulate professional skills but also understand more deeply the meaning of the work they pursue. From there, they understand that to become a true journalist, it requires courage, perseverance and professional responsibility.
Persistence and passion
Unlike previous generations of journalists, today’s journalism students are starting their careers in the context of the booming digital age. The rapid development of digital technology, social networks and artificial intelligence requires them to be agile, proficient in many skills and always ready to adapt to the constant changes in the media environment.

In addition, since the beginning of the year, a series of press agencies from central to local levels have been reorganized and streamlined, causing many students to worry about their job opportunities being limited. However, when asked about these challenges, many students remained steadfast in their choices.
Hoang Ngoc Ha, 4th year student, Journalism class K19: I believe that every difficulty will be an opportunity for me to learn and grow. I will try to constantly improve my skills and knowledge and always keep my passion and enthusiasm to pursue this dream.
Despite the difficulties and challenges of journalism, most journalism students still maintain a strong belief in the path they have chosen. Today’s journalism students are honing their skills and practicing professional ethics every day to become courageous, creative, and socially responsible journalists.
