On May 8, Vice Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Tu Cong Hoang conveyed the direction of the Chairman of Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee on agreeing to the policy of implementing a scientific project on surveying and assessing the quality and potential of exploiting saline sand in Thi Nai lagoon area to serve the leveling of construction works in the province.

The topic was proposed by the Department of Science and Technology of Binh Dinh province based on reports and surveys from the Department of Construction on the urgent need to mobilize and search for new sources of construction materials to serve the leveling of large works and projects in the area.

According to the Department of Science and Technology, from the calculations of the Department of Construction, the total demand for construction materials in Binh Dinh province in the period of 2026-2030 is forecasted to need over 11.7 million cubic meters. Of which, the forecasted demand for sand for the Quy Nhon - Pleiku expressway project to start construction in 2025 is about 1.568 million cubic meters.

The total sand reserves in Binh Dinh province that can be mobilized in the period of 2024 - 2025 are about 1.04 million cubic meters. There is currently a shortage of construction sand for construction projects. Therefore, the need to mobilize construction materials and find new sources of materials and alternative materials for projects, especially the Quy Nhon - Pleiku highway and the North - South high-speed railway is very urgent.

Thi Nai Lagoon is a salt marsh ecological complex of up to 5,000 hectares.

It is expected that in June 2025, the Department of Science and Technology will start implementing this project.

During the survey, the professional unit will evaluate the quality, reserves and potential areas for exploiting saline sand in Thi Nai lagoon; report and propose solutions for design, construction and acceptance of saline sand roadbed; solutions for reinforcing embankment when using saline sand and protecting the slope of the embankment with saline sand.
