Due to the impact of storms and rains, especially storm No. 5 in 2025 and post-storm circulation with strong winds, heavy rainfall combined with high tides, large waves, and high frequency, the Hai Tien embankment area suffered serious landslides.
The landslide at the Hai Tien embankment, about 900m long, stretching from Hai Tien wharf to Queen hotel, caused cracks and tilts at many locations on the embankment and subsidence in the surrounding area.
Some 2-3m high embankment positions have large cracks, revealing rusty iron bars.
Concrete slabs close to the water's edge were also torn apart, many sections lost their embankment bases due to waves.
With high tides, big waves and the peak of the 2025 storm season, this area is at risk of continued subsidence and landslides at any time, potentially posing a risk to the safety of property and lives of residents and tourists.
Currently, local authorities have stretched ropes and put up signs to restrict people from approaching the landslide area; at the same time, widely informed businesses, restaurants, hotels, tourists, and local people about the dangerous level of the landslide, asking people and tourists not to go near the landslide site.
The People's Committee of Hoang Tien commune has issued a document requesting the Provincial People's Committee to direct relevant departments and branches to inspect and consider declaring an emergency situation of landslides in Hoang Tien commune embankment in order to deploy timely and effective handling measures.
Mr. Le Duy Trong, Head of Economic Department, People's Committee of Hoang Tien Commune, said: The landslide situation in Hai Tien embankment area seriously affects the safety of life and property of people, tourists and businesses. The locality has implemented temporary remedial measures according to the "4 on-site" principle, mobilizing machinery and human resources to use sandbags to fill in some landslide bases. In the long term, there needs to be detailed and specific surveys and assessments by experts, departments and branches to come up with the most feasible remedial plan, contributing to protecting the coast of Hai Tien tourist area, residential areas and coastal infrastructure works.
It is known that Hoang Tien commune has a 6.8km long coastline belonging to Hai Tien beach tourist area. On this coastline, serious erosion and landslides have occurred in many locations. In August 2024, the erosion and coastal erosion in this area occurred very quickly and complicatedly. The deepest point of erosion into the shore at that time was about 30m at some locations in the old Hoang Truong commune (now Hoang Tien commune).
The Hai Tien sea dike emergency treatment project was built in early 2018 after this coastal area was heavily affected by storm No. 10 in 2017.
