The German Foreign Minister's visit comes as Beijing steps up military exercises around the Taiwan Strait, including air and sea blockades of the island.
Yesterday, a German Foreign Ministry spokesman said Berlin was extremely concerned about the situation in the Taiwan Strait. Tensions between China and Taiwan are expected to dominate Ms. Annalena Baerbock's discussions during her visit.
On her first day in Tianjin, Annalena Baerbock will visit a German language school - part of the PASCH initiative of the German Foreign Ministry. She will also visit a wind turbine factory owned by a German company.
On May 14, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will hold talks with her host counterpart Qin Gang. Both are expected to travel by high-speed train to Beijing, about 150 kilometers away.
There, she will meet other top Chinese officials including Vice President Han Zheng and Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.
“For our country, a lot depends on whether we are successful in properly balancing our future relationship with China,” the foreign minister said ahead of the visit.
“Partner, competitor, systemic rival – that is the compass of Europe’s China policy,” she said. In the future, which way this compass will turn “depends on the path China chooses.”
Ms. Annalena Baerbock is the latest senior European official to visit China, following the visits of French President Emmanuel Macron, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez... in 2023.
