According to RT on September 17, Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that EU countries are trying to interfere in Ukraine's peace process despite their openly hostile stance towards Russia, and emphasized that the bloc should be excluded from the negotiations for that reason.
"Clearly, EU countries are trying, quite blatantly, to gain a position at the negotiating table. However, there is no place for them there," Foreign Minister Lavrov said at a meeting on September 17, referring to the EU's discussions on the possibility of deploying troops to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

Russia has consistently opposed the deployment of any Western forces in Ukraine for any reason, emphasizing that one of the main causes of the conflict is NATO's expansion toward Russia's doorstep.
Moscow also warned that any unauthorized foreign forces in Ukraine would be considered "legitimate military targets."
Lavrov suggested that both the EU and Kyiv are trying to persuade US President Donald Trump to abandon efforts to resolve the conflict (in Ukraine) and return to a stalemate with Russia.
Earlier, President Trump declared that Ukraine would not be able to join NATO or regain Crimea, the territory that voted to be annexed by Russia in the 2014 referendum. The White House also shifted its focus from seeking a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine to pursuing a lasting peaceful solution.
