On the afternoon of June 4, information from Military Hospital 175 said that they had just successfully treated patient NVS (35 years old, living in Ho Chi Minh City) who suffered a stroke, the cause of which was due to unsafe cupping treatment at home.
It is known that Mr. S is healthy, recently transferred to the Emergency Department of Military Hospital 175 in a state of lethargy, complete loss of language, complete paralysis of the right side of the body, and the skin on the left side of the neck still has traces of the cupping device.
The medical team at Military Hospital 175 rescued a patient who had unsafe cupping at home, leading to a critical stroke.
Immediately, the hospital activated the stroke alarm procedure (code stroke). After urgent clinical and paraclinical examination, the doctors diagnosed the patient with a left hemisphere ischemic stroke in the second hour due to occlusion of the left internal carotid artery and left middle cerebral artery by a blood clot.
Immediately after the intervention, the patient continued to receive intensive medical care at the Department of Neurology. In less than 48 hours, the patient fully recovered consciousness and muscle strength.
Ten days later, cognitive language function recovered completely, with only a few motor language function deficits remaining and he is on the path of speech therapy rehabilitation.
Doctor Ta Vuong Khoa, Head of the vascular intervention team of the neurointerventional unit, Department of Neurology of the hospital, said that this is a very severe and complicated stroke case, a rare clinical case in the world .
CT scan of patient S.
The entire left hemisphere of the brain was cut off from blood supply, seriously threatening the patient's life. Doctors had to race against time to save the patient.
"What is worth mentioning in this patient's case is that cupping therapy, a long-standing and widely used folk treatment method, is the direct cause of internal carotid artery dissection," Dr. Khoa shared.
According to Military Hospital 175, the principle of cupping therapy is to create negative pressure in specialized cups attached to the skin to generate suction, the suction can be very strong depending on the skill or desire of the practitioner and the person being treated.
Therefore, it is recommended to avoid placing on body areas with thin skin and muscles, shallow blood vessels to avoid the risk of causing vascular trauma.
Military Hospital 175 has also received stroke cases, including critical stroke cases, caused by trauma causing dissection of the neck arteries, both the internal carotid and vertebral arteries, after "neck cracking" movements by barbers, masseurs... for their customers, or simply after excessive neck rotation, bending and flexing movements of the patient himself.
