Dutch man brings images of old Vietnam to children in Da Nang

Images of Vietnam in the period 1930-1940 appear vividly and realistically through the photos of Sofia Yablonska. Those photos were collected, displayed and introduced to children living in Da Nang City by Mr. Roby Bellemans (Netherlands).

Mr. Roby Bellemans is a person who loves Vietnamese culture and history. While reading a newspaper, he learned about photographer Sofia Yablonska and her photos of Vietnam. He was determined to contact the museum that is storing those photos, asking for permission to print and display them, introducing them to children in Da Nang.

Taking advantage of his office where he often organizes workshops on Tran Duc Thong Street (Da Nang City), Mr. Roby Bellemans displays and introduces collected photos of the daily life of Vietnamese people to children at home and abroad.

According to Mr. Roby Bellemans, culture is the root and is important in human development.

That's why he wants to find ways to help children have a full understanding of culture.

"I have been in Vietnam for the past 16 years and I love this land very much. So when I saw those photos, I immediately had the idea of ​​introducing them to children.

"I want students to understand what life was like in Vietnam more than 80 years ago, learn about Vietnamese culture in the last century, and see the differences and development of Vietnam and Vietnamese culture through each historical period," Mr. Roby Bellemans shared.

To bring culture closer to children, Mr. Roby Bellemans chose the pictorial approach, because according to him, these are products that are easily accessible to children and create interest in them.

Mr. Roby Bellemans collected and exhibited about 70 photos, realistically depicting the life, landscape and people of Vietnam in the years 1930-1940. Those images of old memories of Vietnam were brought closer to children by Mr. Roby Bellemans.

Images of everyday life of the people have been recorded in an interesting and emotional way. They are documents and effective tools to connect children with culture.

Mr. Roby Bellemans regularly organizes free workshops such as stamp making, painting... for children every Sunday.

During the sessions, he introduced the photos and let the children explore and ask questions about the things they were curious about. According to him, this is a way to help children remember and have a lasting impression of what they have learned.

"When looking at those pictures, the children really like them, including Vietnamese, Russian and American children, they are all very interested in them. Seeing their excitement and surprised faces makes me extremely happy and delighted," said Mr. Roby Bellemans.

Mr. Roby Bellemans also regularly reads books and documents about Vietnamese history and culture to have enough knowledge to answer questions for children.

He plans to display and introduce the photos for 3 months so that many foreign and Vietnamese children have the opportunity to learn and know about Vietnamese culture.
