The Trans-Asia Highway, the traffic axis connecting the provinces from An Giang to Ca Mau, passing through Dong Hoa commune, has recently become a nightmare for residents and drivers. The road surface is peeling, full of potholes, and many sections are sunken like “car traps”, making travel extremely difficult.

According to records, from the beginning of Hamlet 8 Xang to Hamlet Thanh An, Dong Hoa Commune, a 6km stretch, the road surface is severely damaged. Potholes nearly half a meter wide appear continuously; many places have stagnant water, making them slippery. Motorbikes have to constantly avoid them, trucks can only "crawl" slowly, causing traffic congestion whenever there are many vehicles.

Mr. Le Thanh Dung, resident of Hamlet 8 Xang said: “I work as a construction worker in An Bien commune. Every day, I have to ride my motorbike nearly 15km to work, but I don’t dare to go fast because the road is so damaged. One day, it rained heavily, the water flooded the potholes, and I almost fell several times. People here really hope that the authorities will repair the road soon.”

Ms. Pham Thi Kim Hoa - a vendor at Saturday Market (An Bien) said: "I carry vegetables and fruits to Saturday Market but the goods are damaged a lot due to the bumpy road. When it's sunny, it's dusty, when it's raining, it's muddy, every time I go through it, it's like overcoming an obstacle."

According to residents, the road has been in disrepair since early 2025, but has been more severely damaged in recent months due to the increased number of trucks transporting raw materials. Many drivers say the damage has doubled their travel time.

Mr. Lai Van Quy - a driver transporting goods from An Giang to Ca Mau said: "Driving through the Dong Hoa commune road is the most difficult, with many potholes. Sometimes, we accidentally turn the wheel and fall into a hole, requiring us to drive the car out, which is very time-consuming. With a road like this, we drivers are under too much pressure."

Faced with the above situation, voters of Dong Hoa commune expressed their indignation and requested the government to find a solution soon. After many requests, the road has only been temporarily repaired, patched locally, and the road surface has deteriorated very quickly. People want the authorities to have a fundamental solution, upgrading the entire route to ensure traffic safety and minimize accidents.

Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Council of Dong Hoa Commune Truong Minh Dieu said that the Trans-Asia Highway is not under the management authority of the commune. All opinions of voters were recorded by the commune, reported and submitted to the Standing Committee of the Provincial People's Council.

The proposed highlight is to recommend the province work with the traffic management unit to prioritize capital allocation for repairing and upgrading the Trans-Asia Highway section through Dong Hoa commune; at the same time, assign specialized agencies to survey the actual level of damage, assess the cause and develop a sustainable solution.

“We understand the difficulties and hardships that people are facing when traveling on this route. The commune has repeatedly proposed upgrading and repairing, especially dangerous potholes and subsidence areas, but due to limited resources, the repairs have not been thoroughly implemented,” said Mr. Truong Minh Dieu.

Mr. Ngo Van Duc, resident of Thanh An hamlet, Dong Hoa commune, said: “I feel so sorry for students who have fallen down while crossing this road several times. I brought materials to fill some large potholes myself, but after a few days they were washed away by water or blown off by trucks.”
