High risk of failing graduation, Hanoi directs schools to review closely

Nearly 1/3 of the students' test scores were below average. More than 50% of students scored 5 or lower in Math, Biology, and Geography. The rate was over 30% in Literature, Physics, and English. Nearly 32,000 tests scored below 3 points. Notably, 4,228 tests scored below zero, while with just one test with this score, a student would have failed to graduate.

These are notable figures in the survey results of grade 11 students (subjects Literature, Math) and grade 12 students (subjects Literature, Math, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Information Technology, Industrial Technology, Agricultural Technology, Economic and Legal Education).

More than 4,000 failed exams

The survey results show that in grade 11, both Math and Literature had low average scores, 5.04 and 5.77 points respectively.

In grade 12, only Literature subject has an average score of 7 points (7.08 points), there are 4 subjects with above 6 points: English, Agriculture, History, and Information Technology. The remaining subjects are all at the 5 point threshold.

Compared to Hanoi 's 2024 High School Graduation Exam scores in both Literature and Math, Hanoi's survey scores are significantly lower. In Math, the average survey score this year is 5.1 points, 1.5 points lower than the average score of last year's exam results (6.73 points). In Literature, the average survey score this year is only 5.62 points, nearly 2 points lower than the average score of 2024 exam results (7.23 points).

The survey results show that the highest average score is in the range of 6 - 7 with 105,903 candidates accounting for 22.8%; the second is the score range of 5 to 6 with 97,848 candidates accounting for about 21%.

The number of exams with perfect scores (10 points) is very small, 389, accounting for less than 0.1% (0.08%). The number of scores above 8 accounts for 7.73%.

The percentage of students with below average scores (below 5) is 31.86%. This means that there is still a large number of weak students who need more support.

According to the leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, through the score distribution, it can be seen that the survey has differentiated and clarified the level and test results of good - excellent - average - weak students, especially in the score group from 3 to 9.

The results also showed that the risk of failing graduation is high in grade 12 when the number of exams with a score below 3 is nearly 32,000, accounting for 6.78%. There are 4,228 exams with failing scores (from 1 point or less, accounting for 0.91%) while only one exam with failing scores is enough for a student to fail graduation.

In 2024, Hanoi had 205 students fail to graduate. Based on this year's survey results, just counting the number of candidates who are likely to fail to graduate because of failing the exam, the number of candidates at risk of failing is at least 5 times higher than in 2024.

The group of schools with the lowest survey results are vocational education centers - continuing education, and professional schools. According to statistics from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, out of 25 schools with an average score below 4, there are 24 vocational education centers - continuing education, and professional schools.

Classify subjects, review exams according to new exam format

Regarding the survey exam, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that the exam questions ensure the regulations on the structure and format of the High School Graduation Exam from 2025 according to Decision No. 764/QD-BGDDT dated March 8, 2024 of the Ministry of Education and Training.

The matrix closely follows the reference test matrix of the Ministry of Education and Training in terms of recognition rate (40%), understanding (30%) and application (30%); ensuring the requirements to be met and differentiating competencies according to requirements.

The content of the exam ensures accuracy, science and especially closely follows professional requirements in teaching and developing capacity, requiring students to apply knowledge to solve practical problems.

Accordingly, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training determined that the quality of the survey scores through students' work accurately reflected the quality of education in schools, regions and subjects.

Faced with the low survey results, Mr. Ha Xuan Nham, Head of Secondary Education Department, Hanoi Department of Education and Training, requested schools to focus on reviewing and classifying students' levels to have effective plans for organizing review and training, paying attention to the "coverage" of the knowledge topics reviewed in each subject.

Reviewing should pay attention to the new points in this year's exam format. Specifically, instructing students to practice methods for solving true-false questions in each topic of the 12th grade curriculum. This is a completely new type of multiple-choice question, not found in previous graduation exams.

Schools build a system of review questions that closely follow the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program, thoroughly focusing on training students more on questions that have practical, interdisciplinary meaning; using learned knowledge to solve practical problems.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training also requested schools to inform students to follow programs broadcast on channel H2 of Hanoi Radio and Television about topics and lectures for graduation exam review in the subjects of Math, Literature, and English. The program is scheduled to air at 9 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, from April 4 to June 8.

Grade 12 students can download and install the Hanoi On application to participate in high school graduation exam preparation.

"The Department of Secondary Education will have a detailed analysis of the results of the survey test, consult with experts and send them to schools," said Mr. Nham.
