Teachers' houses flooded up to the roof, schools full of mud, heavily damaged after flood

At Vinh Nam village school, Duy Vinh Kindergarten (Nam Phuoc commune, Da Nang city), more than 80% of teaching equipment and machinery serving students' daily activities were damaged.

During the recent historic flood, the school was flooded more than 2 meters deep. Although teachers tried to raise the furniture, they still could not predict the water level.

From early morning on November 1, after the flood receded, teachers were present to clean up. “Most of the equipment was submerged in water, the scene was so heartbreaking. We based on the flood level of previous years to raise the furniture, but we did not expect the flood to be this big,” said a teacher at Vinh Nam school.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, Principal of Duy Vinh Kindergarten, said that the main school in Ha Nam village has 2 floors, the teaching equipment has been moved to a higher level so it was only flooded with mud, not much damage.

The sub-school in Vinh Nam village suffered the most damage because it had no upper floors, most of the equipment was soaked in water for a long time, and the students' school supplies and beds were covered with mud.

“We have reported the damage to the Nam Phuoc Commune People’s Committee. This morning, the school’s teachers worked with the army to clean up, hoping to welcome the students back to school soon,” said the school’s principal.

At Nguyen Dinh Chieu Secondary School (Go Noi Commune, Da Nang City), the entire school yard was flooded with mud, and three rows of classrooms on the first floor were also covered in mud. Teachers were present early to clean up, push the mud, scrub tables and chairs... so that students could return to school next week.

Mr. Nguyen Ban, the school’s principal, said that thanks to proactively moving furniture and equipment to the second floor, the damage was mainly to wet tables and chairs, and some small equipment. Even in the flood, teachers and school staff waded in the water to clean up.

From November 1, as soon as the floodwaters receded, the school mobilized all teachers to gather at the school to clean up their belongings, trying to welcome students back early next week.

Not only the school, many teachers in the area also had their houses flooded. Some teachers' families had to climb onto the roof to take shelter or evacuate to neighbors' houses.

"Most of the school's students live in flooded areas, and communication has not been established yet, so the school has not been able to count the losses from their families," said teacher Nguyen Ban.
