In the talk show "Positioning yourself and conquering employers" within the event "Career Journey and Job Connection" 2024 (VNU Job Fair 2024) organized by Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU), experts shared stories on how to position your personal brand.

Ms. Pham Thi Thu Hien, Director of the Recruitment and Talent Attraction Center of Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank (SHB) shared that the GenZ generation (those born between 1997 and 2012) today is very comfortable expressing their personality. Meanwhile, employers for this generation belong to Generation X (those born between 1970 and 1989), who live in a social environment where they have to restrain their personality. Employers themselves also have to adapt to the changes and realize that the current Gen Z generation has many outstanding advantages.

As a recruiter, Ms. Hien interacts with many GenZ students and finds that the problem of positioning their personal brand seems easy but is actually difficult.

According to Ms. Hien, to define oneself, each person must build their core identity by identifying their values, passions, skills and unique personality. This is the foundation that helps students understand who they are and what value they will bring to society and the community.

“The image that appears to others (appearance, communication, working style, etc.) is an important factor in personal positioning. But to maintain long-term positioning and be positively evaluated, it is necessary to build trust, create prestige, and maintain an impression (which means making constant efforts),” said Ms. Hien.

Citing the case of artist Son Tung-MTP as a "case study" for students, Ms. Hien said that Son Tung is considered a successful person in building a personal brand thanks to the harmonious combination of talent, creativity and smart strategy.

The core message that artist Son Tung-MTP has spread is "Follow your passion and be yourself". He is steadfast in that through his own journey, not blindly following trends.

"This is a case that surprised me the most. His popularity has been maintained for more than ten years, even though he doesn't release products regularly, but every time he appears, he creates a huge attraction," Ms. Hien commented.

According to Ms. Hien, personal positioning is not to become famous, but to be recognized whether in a small or large group. Looking at Son Tung-MTP's journey over the past 10 years, the achievements are not natural but worthy in their field. Anyone does not necessarily have to be at the top, but needs to be recognizable. This is the factor that employers need when choosing candidates. That is, candidates must highlight why employers need them among many other candidates.

Ms. Hien commented that there is a situation where many students do not know what kind of person they want to become, and are confused in their choices. She suggested that they should choose a goal after working. However, this goal cannot be changed continuously because that will not affirm their personal brand to themselves and those around them.

To identify core values, students must answer three questions: where they come from, where they will be in the future, and what they will do.

VNU Job Fair 2024 attracted nearly 8,000 students inside and outside VNU with about 60 consulting and recruitment booths of 44 domestic and foreign corporations and enterprises, bringing more than 7,000 job and internship opportunities.

Vice President of VNU, Dao Thanh Truong affirmed that the university always accompanies students on their journey of self-development and career building. He hopes that with the support from businesses and employers, along with the knowledge and skills accumulated in VNU, students will find their own path and make solid progress in the future.
