Pre-match comments
It is no coincidence that U23 Yemen is considered by experts to be a strong candidate in Group C. Many months ago, Coach Amin Al Suneini had planned to carefully prepare the team. U23 Yemen trained in Marib (Yemen), before going to Fujairah (UAE) to train and play friendly matches with some local clubs. The results of the matches were kept secret, as a way to create an element of surprise for the qualifying round.
Yemen’s 23-man squad is largely made up of local players, with the exception of goalkeeper Muhammad Ramadan Shuey Jumaan, who plays in Saudi Arabia. The most notable are the attacking trio of Abdulaziz Masnoum, Qassem Al-Sharafi and Hamza Mahrous. Mahrous, who is only 19 years old, has already played for the national team and is a regular starter.
Yemen’s style of play is typical of West Asia: strong, fast, and takes full advantage of their physical size in aerial situations. In addition, they also have many technical players who are capable of making a difference.
“We have prepared very carefully for this qualifying round. The whole team aims to advance to the final round and to do that, the opening match against Singapore is extremely important,” coach Amin Al Suneini affirmed before the match started.
While Yemen came to Viet Tri with the strongest squad, Singapore entered the tournament with many questions. Coach Kosei Nakamura and his team did not participate in the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Finals, which is considered an important dress rehearsal. Instead, they only had two friendly matches: a draw with U23 Philippines and a win against U23 Malaysia. Despite the positive results, Singapore's preparation fund was assessed as limited.
The Singapore U23 squad this time is quite young, most of them are in the U20 group. Some notable faces include Japanese-born midfielder Junki Kenn Yoshimura. Under Nakamura, the Lion Island team pursues a high-pressing style of play, with a high sense of discipline.
Singapore’s biggest drawback is their lack of international experience and physicality. Most of the players have never faced opponents with a more physical style of play like Yemen or Vietnam. Furthermore, due to the late arrival, they only had one training session at Viet Tri Stadium, a significant disadvantage in adapting to the field and climate conditions.
“We know we are not highly rated, but the whole team will play with a fearless spirit. The match against Yemen is an opportunity for the young players to prove their abilities,” coach Nakamura shared in a press conference before the match.
Form, head-to-head history
In their last 5 matches, Yemen U23 have won 3 and lost 2, scoring 10 goals and conceding 6. These numbers reflect their diverse attacking ability, but also indicate that their defense still has some areas that need to be improved.
On the other hand, U23 Singapore has a modest record with 1 win, 3 draws and 1 loss in the last 5 matches. Compared to Yemen, it is clear that the Lion Island team is inferior in both performance and quality of personnel.
Head-to-head history is also in favor of the West Asian representative. In the 2024 U23 Asian qualifiers, Yemen defeated Singapore 3-0. With careful preparation and a squad of players with international experience, U23 Yemen is rated higher than its opponent and has a good chance of winning all 3 points in the upcoming match.
