While 23 weeks pregnant, Ms. P. had a work accident that severed her right hand and crushed her forearm. Doctors at Binh Duong General Hospital decided to temporarily graft the limb to her lower leg using advanced microsurgery techniques to preserve as much living tissue as possible, creating conditions for future reattachment.
When the patient was in the 34th week of pregnancy, the hospital organized an interdisciplinary consultation, synchronously mobilizing the capacity of anesthesia, resuscitation, trauma and orthopedics, obstetrics, intensive care, hematology and nutrition, and at the same time consulting with experts from leading hospitals such as Tu Du Hospital and Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital.
During the many hours of surgery, the team performed a series of complex techniques such as removing the hand from the leg along with a 15cm segment of the posterior tibial artery, combining the radius with a screw plate, connecting blood vessels to restore circulation, grafting tendons and grafting the lost nerve. Along with that, the fetal heart was continuously monitored, ensuring the safety of both mother and two fetuses.

The surgery confirmed the expertise and smooth coordination of the entire system when the hand was well perfused, the patient was alert, able to eat and drink, the fingers could move slightly according to physical therapy instructions and the pregnancy was stable.
This success not only restored the mother’s function but also demonstrated profound humanitarian significance, helping her retain the ability to care for her two children after birth. At the same time, the miracle also affirmed the role of local health care in handling complex cases, requiring high qualifications and effective multidisciplinary coordination.
