According to the family, since birth, the patient had a small birthmark on his lower lip. The birthmark gradually grew over the years, until around the age of 40 it developed into a tumor the size of a finger and continued to swell. In the past three years, the tumor has grown rapidly, measuring about 10x8x6cm, equivalent to an adult's fist. The tumor often bleeds, oozes fluid, and has an odor, seriously affecting eating and daily activities.
Because of her fear of surgery at an advanced age, the patient accepted to live with the disease for many years, until the tumor became necrotic, severely infected and bleeding continuously, her family took her to the Hanoi Oncology Hospital. After being advised and encouraged by the doctor, the patient decided to go under the knife.
The pre-operative assessment showed that this was a complicated case with many risks, from old age, difficulty in performing anesthesia, to the need to ensure aesthetics as well as infection prevention... However, the surgery was safe and successful. The tumor was completely removed, and the doctors simultaneously reconstructed the structure of the lower lip, helping the patient to eat and communicate better.
Pathology results determined that this was a cavernous hemangioma - a type of vascular malformation consisting of blood-filled cavities with thin walls, which can easily cause bleeding and infection when it grows large.
After surgery, the patient and his family expressed joy and emotion when the tumor that had existed for nearly 90 years was finally removed, helping him get rid of his self-consciousness and fear of being looked at by those around him and significantly improving his quality of life.
From this case, doctors advise people not to delay treatment due to fear or hesitation about surgery. Many diseases, if intervened early, will help patients avoid complications, reduce recovery time and especially improve quality of life. Modern medicine is completely capable of providing effective support in complex cases, even in the elderly.
