Farmers in the province urgently produce winter crops.

These days, in all the fields in the province, the atmosphere of winter crop production is very busy and urgent. Taking advantage of favorable weather, people are actively plowing the land, planting and caring for winter crops with the expectation of a bumper crop, contributing to increasing income and stabilizing life.

Having just finished harvesting the winter-spring rice crop, Mrs. Hoang Thi Than's family in Nhuan 3 village, Tang Loong commune is busy clearing the fields and preparing for the third crop.

Taking advantage of a break, Mrs. Than shared: “Every year, after the harvest, the family cuts the straw, hoes the land, and about a week later, they plant seeds. This winter, my family planted sweet potatoes and corn, both to provide food and to feed pigs and chickens, which also saves some costs.”

Like Mrs. Than, many households in Tang Loong are accustomed to year-round production. Winter crops have become an important source of income, both taking advantage of land after rice cultivation and providing additional food and animal feed in the last months of the year.

In Vo Lao commune, the recent floods caused many areas of winter crops to be flooded and buried. As soon as the water receded, people urgently improved the land and replanted crops. In other fields, winter crops have begun to green up, signaling a reviving crop season.

In Chieng 2 field, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Lan is meticulously fertilizing and weeding her sweet potato and corn fields. While working, she shares: "Every year I grow sweet potatoes and glutinous corn. I eat the tubers of the sweet potatoes, use the leaves as animal feed, and sell the fresh corn, each crop also brings in nearly ten million dong."

With flat terrain and fertile land, Vo Lao commune has over 400 hectares of land that can be increased in cropping season, and for many years has been considered the province's key winter crop production area. To improve land use efficiency, the commune has directed people to gradually switch from traditional crops such as corn and sweet potatoes to vegetables, especially safe and clean vegetables, to increase economic value.

“The commune is reviewing land funds, selecting crops suitable for the climate and soil; inviting businesses and cooperatives to join in production and consumption of vegetables to serve industrial parks and collective kitchens to help people find stable output for agricultural products.”

Mr. Nguyen Anh Duc - Vice Chairman of People's Committee of Vo Lao Commune

In other localities in the province, farmers are also actively implementing winter crop production. In Hanh Phuc commune, agricultural officers are regularly present in the fields, instructing people on techniques for growing vegetables and tubers suitable for the highland climate.

This winter-spring crop, Hanh Phuc commune aims to plant more than 13 hectares of vegetables, concentrated in the villages of Hat 1, Hat 2, Luu 1, Luu 2 and over 7 hectares of corn biomass for animal feed. To achieve the plan, the commune propagates and mobilizes people to take advantage of the land area after harvesting the summer-autumn rice, upland land, and single-crop fields to grow winter crops.

People are instructed on proper soil preparation techniques, making high beds, ensuring drainage, and using short-term, high-yield vegetable and root varieties such as potatoes, cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower, etc.

The commune also promotes mechanization in concentrated production areas, expanding the area in places with proactive irrigation and drainage, contributing to improving the efficiency and economic value of the winter crop.

After harvesting the summer rice crop, people quickly prepare the land to plant winter crops.

In 2025, the whole province plans to plant more than 14,960 hectares of winter crops, including 7,362 hectares of corn, 1,245 hectares of sweet potatoes, 78 hectares of potatoes, 6,201 hectares of various vegetables and 74 hectares of flowers; the average production value is estimated at 80 million VND/hectare.

Identifying the winter crop as the main commodity production season, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has directed departments, offices, specialized units and localities to closely follow the plan, proactively deploy production, diversify crops, spread out crops, harvest reasonably, and link production with the consumption market.

Along with that, encourage people to expand the area of high-value crops, strengthen links with businesses and cooperatives to stabilize output and improve production efficiency.

Ms. Cao Thi Hoa Binh - Head of the Department of Crop Production, Plant Protection, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Medicine and Aquaculture of the province said: The agricultural sector has issued a document guiding localities to make the most of their land fund after harvesting the crop, speed up the progress of land preparation and planting, especially in areas with favorable irrigation conditions. At the same time, priority is given to the use of short-term, cold-resistant, pest-resistant and high-yielding and high-quality crop varieties.

Along with that, localities have increased propaganda and guided people to quickly and neatly harvest ripe rice areas to promptly prepare the land and plant early winter crops, implementing the motto "morning rice, afternoon corn". Encourage the construction and replication of production and product consumption linkage models, forming specialized areas, safe and sustainable production, bringing high economic efficiency.

The agricultural sector also recommends that people need to closely monitor weather and climate developments, proactively develop and deploy timely response plans, and protect the safety of winter crop production.

To date, the entire province has planted nearly 5,200 hectares of winter crops, reaching more than 34% of the plan. Localities are taking advantage of favorable weather, focusing on human and material resources to speed up production progress, striving to complete the planting plan by mid-November, creating the premise for a successful winter crop.

The winter crop is not only an extension of the summer-autumn rice crop, but also increases land use value, creates more jobs and increases farmers' income. With the initiative of the people, along with the synchronous participation of the government and specialized sectors, the 2025 winter crop promises to be successful, contributing to compensating for damages caused by floods and stabilizing production in the highland fields of Lao Cai.
