The knowledge bus and the journey to spread reading culture

With their convenience, the Provincial Library's mobile library buses are not only a mobile bookstore that brings books to readers, but also opens up a colorful space of knowledge, with many creative and interesting experiences. In the journey of connecting culture and education, the mobile library buses contribute to spreading the reading culture in the community, cultivating a generation that loves knowledge, loves to read, and loves to learn.

At Nam Cuong Primary School in Nam Cuong Ward, in mid-October 2025, the mobile library vehicle of the Provincial Library, Branch 1, brought books and newspapers to serve the teachers and students of the school.

After being introduced to the books and equipment on the bus by the librarian, and guided in choosing age-appropriate materials, the students selected their favorite newspapers and storybooks.

Although Nam Cuong Primary School has a library, the way the program is organized, along with the mobile library vehicle equipped with a wide variety of books and newspapers, has created a fresh, enjoyable, and enthusiastic reading experience for the students.

Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, a student at Nam Cuong Primary School, shared: “The mobile library brings books to school, and my friends and I are very happy because we get to read many new, interesting, and useful books. I hope the mobile library comes to school many more times so we can read and relax after school.”

Ms. Nguyen Kim Tuyen, a staff member of the Provincial Library, said: “The excitement, curiosity, and joyful enthusiasm of students at the schools when the mobile library arrives make us feel that these trips are truly meaningful. On each journey of the knowledge-sharing vehicle, we always strive to inspire a love of books, guide them on how to read effectively, and interact with students through beneficial activities. Each activity of the mobile library vehicle is not just a simple extracurricular activity, but also a journey of connection and spreading the love of books to students.”

The mobile library model of the Provincial Library, Branch 1, was funded by the Val de Marne Provincial Council of the Republic of France. The mobile library model, managed by the Provincial Library, began implementation in early 2008.

In addition, in 2016, the mobile multimedia library vehicle named "Light of Knowledge" was implemented by the Library Department of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism with sponsorship from Vingroup Corporation, specifically the "Thien Tam" Fund, which provided the vehicle, books, and computers for the provincial library's second branch.

For over 10 years, the sight of the mobile library vehicle visiting schools throughout the province to serve readers including teachers, students, and the general public has become familiar.

Unlike traditional libraries that serve readers at a fixed location, a mobile library can carry a large collection of books and newspapers to wherever readers need them.

The mobile library vehicle is equipped with a computer connected to a LAN network, a projector, and a specialized shelving system capable of holding 3,000-4,000 books, along with various accompanying equipment such as a generator, engine, and lighting system. This makes it very convenient for mobile service to readers in remote and mountainous areas of the province.

Mobile libraries are equipped with a variety of books and stories, organized by main themes such as politics , society, law, science and technology, agriculture, medicine, literature, and children's literature; electronic materials; and bibliographic materials… They operate using a combination of on-site service and collaboration with local facilities for collective lending, meeting the reading, information-seeking, learning, production, daily life, and entertainment needs of students and the public.

In addition, the mobile library also provides students with a book stall displayed right in the schoolyard; organizes activities to encourage students to read independently through question-and-answer games and hands-on activities with their favorite books; and promotes awareness of the role of self-learning and lifelong learning associated with proactively mastering knowledge and technology…

The mobile library vehicle makes four trips a month to serve residential areas and schools; each trip serves 4-5 locations.

In order to better serve the needs of readers, the Provincial Library continuously changes the books and newspapers on its mobile library to suit each location and target audience. As a result, each mobile library trip receives a positive response and support from the people wherever it goes.

Over the past period, mobile library vehicles have served nearly 650,000 readers, delivering more than 1.2 million books and periodicals to local communities.

In addition to serving the public and schools in communes on a monthly basis, the mobile library actively participates in serving political and social activities taking place in the province; organizing and serving festivals to strongly spread the reading culture in the community.

In the coming period, the Provincial Library will continue to deploy mobile library vehicles to localities and schools, aiming to enhance the cultural and spiritual enjoyment of the people, create conditions for people to access many good books, and develop a reading culture in the community.
