On the day she learned her graduation exam results, in a small house in Hiep Hung village, Ea M'droh commune ( Dak Lak ), Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen was speechless when she saw two 10s in history and geography, and an 8 in literature. That was the greatest gift after the difficult learning journey of the female student.
Female students learn by ear and by heart
Talking about her learning journey, Huyen said that in class, she always sat at the front desk, listening to every word the teacher said. When she returned to her dorm room, Huyen diligently reviewed the lessons she had memorized in her head.
Without using special glasses or a teleprompter, Huyen chooses to prepare her lessons carefully at home and then concentrate fully when in class. Her study method does not have many tricks, just patience, one day at a time.
"My eyes are weak, I can't look for long or read as much as my friends. So I have to study in my own way. Listen carefully, remember carefully and don't be distracted for even a minute. I don't memorize history and geography, but I memorize the timeline, events and understand the meaning. With literature, I practice each type of lesson and practice how to develop ideas coherently," Huyen shared.

Huyền’s house is more than 20km from school. Since grade 10, she went alone to Quang Phu town (formerly Cu M’Gar district, now Quang Phu commune) to rent a room to go to school. Her parents were farmers and small traders at the market, with unstable income. Knowing that their daughter had congenital nystagmus, the whole family took her to many places for treatment. But hope faded when the doctor concluded that there was not much they could do.
"There were many days when her eyes hurt so much that she called home and said she wanted to miss a day of school. But then the next day she came to class as if nothing had happened. Once I asked her why she studied so late, and she just said softly: 'I can do it. I have to do it.' It broke my heart to hear that," said Ms. Ho Thi Trang Hong, Huyen's mother, choking up.
Although life away from home is not easy, Huyen still takes care of herself, studies by herself, and tells herself not to give up. Her classmates said that whenever they see Huyen with sore eyes, she still comes to class, still takes notes diligently, and the whole class feels motivated.
"She didn't talk much, but every action made us admire her. One time it was raining heavily and everyone was absent, but Huyen was still in class, her raincoat soaked. She sat and studied as usual," Tran Pham Mai Huong, a classmate, recalled.
Dream of becoming a teacher, inspiring learning

At school, Huyen was an exemplary student. For three consecutive years, she was an excellent student, won two gold medals in the 10-3 traditional Olympic competition, a silver medal in the 30-4 Olympic competition, and two second prizes at the provincial level.
But the most precious thing, according to Huyen, is the faith that her teachers have instilled in her.
"I used to be very self-conscious, but thanks to the teachers who were always there to encourage me, especially Ms. Khuyen who taught geography, I gradually felt that I could do something meaningful. She instilled in me a love for the subject and a positive way of life," Huyen said emotionally.
When asked about her dream, she did not hesitate: "I want to study geography education and become a teacher in the future. I want to return to the disadvantaged areas, teach students like I did in the past, and inspire children to learn. I believe I can do it."
Knowing that their daughter wants to go to university, the family is happy but also worried. Huyen's father, Mr. Nguyen Tuong, shared: "If she is determined, my wife and I must try. No matter how difficult it is, we must let her study well. Even if we have to borrow money, we have to worry."
In the eyes of Mr. Phan Van Thuong, the homeroom teacher, Huyen is not an ordinary student. "You study not only for exams, but also to overcome adversity. If willpower had a form, it would be Huyen. You are a bright flame among the children in the countryside with many deprivations," said Mr. Thuong.
