Raising white-leg shrimp in earthen ponds: Effectiveness from a different approach

Việt NamViệt Nam18/09/2024

( Quang Ngai Newspaper) - In recent years, white-leg shrimp farming in earthen ponds has brought efficiency to dozens of households in Tinh Hoa commune (Quang Ngai city). Some households have even raised shrimp for nearly ten years without any disease outbreaks.

Off-season shrimp farming

Instead of planting in February - March according to the seasonal calendar, Mr. Nguyen Cong Van, in Xuan An village, Tinh Hoa commune, started the shrimp crop in June. This off-season shrimp farming method has brought clear results for Mr. Van's family for nearly 10 years. According to Mr. Van, the weather was still cool at the beginning of the year, so it was favorable for releasing shrimp. However, around May, the weather started to get hot, the water temperature in the pond increased, making the shrimp susceptible to disease and death.

“Although I raise a few crops each year, thanks to the shrimp being disease-free, growing quickly and selling at a good price, my family has a better income, and the effort is also less than that of households raising many crops. Late shrimp release also gives me time to treat the pond well, ensuring the farming environment. In nearly 10 years of shrimp farming, there has never been an outbreak of disease, bringing a stable economic source for my family,” Mr. Van shared.

In addition to choosing off-season farming, Mr. Van and other shrimp farmers in Tinh Hoa also choose a 2-phase farming method. Mr. Van shared that in phase 1, we often release a lot of shrimp into one pond. In phase 2, when the shrimp are as big as the tip of incense powder, or the small end of a chopstick, I start transferring them to 2-3 other ponds. Because when the shrimp grow big, they need a large amount of oxygen, so I have to reduce the farming density. Moreover, changing the living environment helps the shrimp grow quickly, limiting diseases. Farmers have time to treat other ponds before releasing them, ensuring the farming environment.

According to shrimp farmers, in addition to the weather factor, there are large rice fields above the Tinh Hoa shrimp farming area. Around March and April, the rice enters the ear-forming stage. At this time, people inject a lot of chemicals, causing the water flowing down the river to be polluted. If shrimp farmers take this water into the shrimp pond, the shrimp will die. Therefore, many shrimp farmers in Tinh Hoa often "avoid" and do not raise shrimp during this time.

Summarize experience, promote efficiency

While people in other shrimp farming areas in Mo Duc, Binh Son, and Duc Pho districts have switched to raising shrimp in tarpaulin-lined ponds for many years, Tinh Hoa commune still applies the traditional method of raising shrimp in earthen ponds. When raising shrimp in tarpaulin-lined ponds, pond owners must change the water every day to clean the pond, avoiding excess food settling at the bottom of the pond, causing pollution. When raising shrimp in earthen ponds, farmers only need to maintain the correct water level, ensuring enough oxygen for shrimp to grow. Therefore, farmers do not need to change the water every day, but only need to pump in additional water.

Mr. Pham Van Vy, in Hoa Thuan village, Tinh Hoa commune, is also one of the effective shrimp farming households in the locality. Currently, Mr. Vy has 5 shrimp ponds, with an area of about 3,250m2. On average, he releases about 100,000 shrimp per crop. “To be honest, we are not very good at raising shrimp, but thanks to the experience gained during the farming process, we have achieved efficiency. The most important thing in shrimp farming is still controlling the water environment, ensuring the amount of oxygen in the water, not feeding a lot to make the shrimp grow faster. Therefore, to ensure the amount of water pumped into the pond, every farming household is equipped with a well. When we notice that the river water is cloudy and not safe, we will use well water,” Mr. Vy explained.

In addition to the farming method, the way shrimp farmers in Tinh Hoa sell commercial shrimp is also different from other farming areas. Normally, after the shrimp reach a certain weight, farmers will sell them all at once and clean the pond to raise a new batch. However, shrimp farmers in Tinh Hoa choose to harvest in batches to reduce the density of shrimp in the pond. "After selling some, the remaining shrimp in the pond grow very quickly and the selling price is also higher than the previous batch of shrimp. This harvesting method also helps farmers have shrimp to sell regularly, avoiding the situation of harvesting a lot at once, which can easily be forced down by traders," Mr. Vy analyzed.
