"The leaders discussed ways to take trilateral cooperation to the next level," the White House said in a statement released after the meeting in Hiroshima, Japan on Sunday (May 21).

The sides also discussed cooperation in real-time data sharing on regional threats, including tensions on the Korean Peninsula, according to a statement from Japan's Foreign Ministry.

The trilateral meeting also addressed the Indo- Pacific , economic security and engagement with Pacific Islands. Mr. Biden said the trilateral partnership would be stronger, according to the White House.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol held a bilateral meeting earlier in the day, their third meeting this year, as the two East Asian neighbors work to improve ties.

After years of disputes over Japan's 1910-1945 occupation, relations between Japan and South Korea thawed and warmed earlier this year.
