According to Reuters, during his state visit to South Korea on November 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping made the atmosphere of the ceremony more exciting when he gave two Xiaomi smartphones to South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and joked that he should "check for backdoors."

The term “backdoor” refers to a hidden mechanism that allows access to a system, bypassing normal authentication or security controls, and is often mentioned in discussions about cybersecurity.

The visit, which comes after the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the city of Gyeongju, marks Xi's first visit to a US ally in 11 years.

The special gift - a Xiaomi phone made in China - given right on the "home ground" of South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics clearly shows Beijing's technological ambitions, which were emphasized in China's recent five-year economic development plan.

Earlier, President Lee presented Xi with a high-quality wooden Go board. As they approached the gift display table, a South Korean official said the Xiaomi phone screen was made in South Korea.

Mr. Lee immediately picked it up and asked, "How secure is the communication?", causing Mr. Xi and the officials to laugh.

Xi pointed to his phone and jokingly replied, “You can check if there is a back door.” After the humorous exchange, the two leaders continued with the gift-giving ceremony, which also included a traditional Korean mother-of-pearl lacquer tray.

According to Reuters, Mr. Xi's statement reminded many people of previous disputes between China and the US, when Washington proposed requiring exported chips to have tracking and positioning features - something Nvidia affirmed "no backdoors" exist in their products.

China's Foreign Ministry and Xiaomi have not yet responded to Reuters' requests for comment, while South Korea's presidential office said it had no further comment.

During the talks the same day, President Lee asked China to support the resumption of dialogue with North Korea. For his part, Mr. Xi said Beijing is willing to expand cooperation and work with South Korea to address common challenges.

Previously, Mr. Xi also attracted attention with his “off-script” statements. At the military parade in Beijing in September, a microphone recorded a conversation between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the two talked about organ transplants and the possibility of humans living to 150 years old.
