Present at Van Phong Bay on the afternoon of November 4, dozens of households in Dam Mon village (Dai Lanh commune) were busy mobilizing vehicles and human resources to harvest shrimp and fish. These products were brought ashore to sell to traders who were waiting. The atmosphere of shrimp and fish purchasing at Dam Mon fishing port was bustling and bustling .

Many lobsters are not yet of proper size, but people still harvest them to sell early, recover capital and wait for the storm to pass to reproduce.

Mr. Tran Duc Lanh (Dam Mon village) said: “My family has nearly 40 lobster cages preparing for the autumn season. As soon as we heard the storm warning, aquaculture households planned to harvest early and sell early to recover capital. Remembering the storm No. 12 in 2017, we were so scared, if we didn’t sell early, we might lose everything. So, learning from that year’s experience, this time we heard the forecast warning of a big storm coming, so we decided to harvest early. On the 3rd and 4th, my family sold about 500 kg of green lobsters.”

According to records, due to early sales, lobsters and fish prices have decreased compared to normal days. However, with the worry of losing everything when the storm hits, aquaculturists have accepted to sell at low prices to recover capital to reinvest after the storm passes. Currently, traders are buying green lobsters for only about 780,000 VND/kg, down nearly 40,000 VND compared to last week; flower lobsters range from 1.1 to 1.4 million VND/kg, down about 200,000 VND/kg compared to early October. Meanwhile, the price of pomfret has decreased, only 75,000 - 80,000 VND/kg, 20,000 VND lower than normal. Despite the price decrease, purchasing activities are still bustling.

In addition to harvesting early, people also actively tie down their assets on aquaculture rafts. Some people "temporarily sink" their cages in deep water to limit the impact of big waves. Many households buy large ropes to tie down cages and watchtowers to ensure safety when storms hit. Mr. Tran Khanh, a resident of Dai Lanh commune, said, "In 2017, my family raised more than 30 shrimp cages, but when the storm hit, everything was lost, with a loss of more than 700 million VND. Later, we had to borrow money to restore production. Now that the storm is coming, my family is actively tying it up, and on the other hand, selling shrimp early to recover capital. Learning from the experience of the 2017 storm, this year every family is more careful."

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong, Head of the Economic Department of Dai Lanh Commune, the commune currently has 994 aquaculture households, with a total of 34,560 cages for raising lobsters, cobia, pompano and other high-value seafood. This is the main source of income for local people, contributing significantly to socio-economic development. When there was information about storms, the local government, together with departments, branches and organizations, actively propagated and mobilized people to urgently harvest and move cages to safe locations, absolutely not staying at sea when the storm approached. The militia, border guards and local fishermen are coordinating to support transportation and anchoring of vehicles, ensuring the highest safety.

In other localities, people in the communes of Van Hung, Van Ninh, Van Thang, and Tu Bong also gathered to harvest shrimp and fish and sell them at the ports of Dam Mon, Van Thang, and Van Gia. According to statistics, these localities in the Van Phong Bay area have 1,284 aquaculture households with nearly 42,500 shrimp and fish cages. Up to this point, the localities have actively implemented response work, especially resolutely evacuating aquaculture farmers to safety.
