According to an analysis by Newsweek , former US President Donald Trump could make history as the second US president to serve non-consecutive terms if he wins this year's election, a feat last recorded 132 years ago. Mr. Trump is the first defeated president to run for re-election since the late 19th century. President Theodore Roosevelt ran for a third term in 1912, but he had not previously been defeated and failed to win a major party's nomination. The only person to serve two non-consecutive terms as US president was Democrat Grover Cleveland. He was first elected president in 1884. He was defeated for re-election by Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison in 1888 despite winning the popular vote both times. Four years after his unsuccessful run, Cleveland was the Democratic presidential candidate again and won the 1892 election, becoming the only US president to do so. He was both the 22nd and 24th president of the United States. To be elected president, a candidate must win at least 270 electoral votes. Meanwhile, the candidate who wins the majority of the popular vote does not necessarily become president. In 2016, candidate Hillary Clinton won more popular votes, but Mr. Trump won because he had more electoral votes. Mr. Trump has been the Republican presidential candidate three times: first in 2016, then in 2020, and now in 2024. His race with Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, is extremely tight. The Hill newspaper predicts Mr. Trump's re-election chances are 54%.
