OpenAI loses three more senior researchers

Following the firing of CEO Sam Altman, three senior OpenAI researchers Jakub Pachocki, Aleksander Madry, and Szymon Sidor have resigned.

Reuters news agency reported that three senior OpenAI researchers, Jakub Pachocki, Aleksander Madry and Szymon Sidor, told colleagues that they had resigned.

On November 17, OpenAI's board of directors announced that it had fired CEO Sam Altman because it no longer had confidence in his ability to continue leading the company. The decision shocked the entire technology industry.

Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati will temporarily replace Altman at OpenAI while the board conducts a search for a successor.

In addition to losing three senior researchers, OpenAI also saw the departure of Greg Brockman – Chairman of the Board of Directors. The company had previously said Brockman would step down but is staying on. Brockman was one of three co-founders of OpenAI with Altman and Elon Musk in 2015.

On X, Brockman revealed that on the evening of November 17 (local time), Altman was asked to participate in a video conference with board members but Brockman was not present. Here, chief scientist Ilya Sutskever announced the decision to fire Altman.

“Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today,” Brockman wrote, adding that he was informed of his removal from the board in a private call with Sutskever shortly afterward.

OpenAI declined to comment further on the reasons for Altman’s firing, other than that he was not “upfront in his communications with board members.” For his part, Altman said he loved working at OpenAI and “has a lot to say about what’s next.”

Altman, Brockman, and Musk founded OpenAI as a nonprofit in 2015, but Musk left first. The explosion of the ChatGPT chatbot helped make OpenAI a prominent name in the field of artificial intelligence, and Altman became one of the industry's public figures.

Altman has sat down with many heads of state to discuss the potential and risks of AI. Most recently, he attended the APEC CEO Summit in San Francisco. He predicted that AI would be “the biggest leap forward in any major technological revolution we’ve had to date,” and called for regulation to regulate it.

At its first developer conference last week, Altman was a keynote speaker, presenting a vision for the future of AI that could help people perform a variety of tasks. A few days later, he announced that the company would have to suspend new signups for the premium version of ChatGPT.

OpenAI's board of directors includes chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and independent directors such as Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo, tech entrepreneur Tasha McCauley and Helen Toner of the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology.
