Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang, author of the Southern Vietnamese publication, passed away at 1:15 p.m. on May 17 in Ho Chi Minh City, at the age of 75.

Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang (born in 1951 in Saigon), is the author of valuable studies on Vietnamese, especially introducing new insights into the richness and diversity of Southern dialects with the main works: Southern dialects (Social Sciences Publishing House, 1995); Some issues on social dialects (Editor-in-Chief, Social Sciences Publishing House, 2005); Incorrect and ambiguous sentences (co-author,Education Publishing House, 1992); Practical Vietnamese (co-author, Ho Chi Minh City National University Publishing House, 2005); Correcting grammatical errors: conjunction errors (co-author, Education Publishing House, 1989); Vocabulary errors and how to fix them (co-author, Social Sciences Publishing House, 2002)...

In 2021, recognizing the valuable values ​​of Southern Vietnamese , Tre Publishing House republished this publication, adding it to the Rich and Beautiful Vietnamese bookshelf - a collection of many publications on Vietnamese by prestigious experts and authors. Especially with the participation of language researcher, Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Dan, who is also the life partner of Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang.

Southern Vietnamese is a collection of research works by Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang on Southern dialects in comparison with Northern, Central and national dialects in general. In her articles, the author analyzes and explains linguistic phenomena thoroughly and in an extremely interesting way.

The book is divided into 3 parts: Part 1 specializes in analyzing and explaining the differences in lexical and semantic phenomena in the North and South; Part 2 is a collection of materials and main groups of words in the Southern dialect; Part 3 is a series of essays on language, analyzing literary works by Ho Bieu Chanh, Son Nam, Nguyen Ngoc Tu to clarify the interesting features of the Southern dialect and Southern writing, ensuring scientific accuracy but rich in images and emotions, expressing the author's subtle perception and love for language - especially Southern Vietnamese.

In September 2024, Tre Publishing House organized the program "Chatting with the authors of the book series Beautiful Vietnamese " at Ho Chi Minh City Book Street with the participation of 5 authors: Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duc Dan, Associate Professor, Dr. Trinh Sam, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang, journalist Duong Thanh Truyen and poet Le Minh Quoc.

After the program, sharing privately with SGGP Newspaper reporter, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang said that after Tieng Viet Phuong Nam, she is planning to write the next book about reduplicative words. Because according to her, reduplicative words are a characteristic of Vietnamese. Just open the book Chinh phu ngam or Truyen Kieu , you will see that it is impossible to translate into any language better than Vietnamese. "It is good because it is Vietnamese, there are many reduplicative words. When translating into a certain language, the rhyme will not be translated as in the case of luc bat poetry, and reduplicative words", Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang shared.

Unfortunately, before the book could be published, Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang passed away.

The coffin of Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang is lying in state at 390/2 Nguyen Dinh Chieu (Ward 4, District 3, HCMC). The burial ceremony will take place at 0:00 on May 18, and the funeral will take place at 8:00 on May 19. The coffin will then be cremated at Binh Hung Hoa Center.
