Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang (born in 1951 in Saigon) is the author of valuable research on the Vietnamese language, particularly introducing new insights into the richness and diversity of Southern dialects with her main works: Southern Dialects (Social Sciences Publishing House, 1995); Some Issues on Social Dialects (Editor, Social Sciences Publishing House, 2005); Incorrect and Ambiguous Sentences (co-authored, Education Publishing House, 1992); Practical Vietnamese (co-authored, Ho Chi Minh City National University Publishing House, 2005); Correcting Grammatical Errors: Conjunction Errors (co-authored, Education Publishing House, 1989); Vocabulary Errors and How to Correct Them (co-authored, Social Sciences Publishing House, 2002)...

In 2021, recognizing the valuable contributions of " Southern Vietnamese Language ," Tre Publishing House reprinted this publication, adding it to its "Rich and Beautiful Vietnamese Language" book series – a collection of publications on the Vietnamese language by reputable experts and authors. Notably, it features the participation of linguist Professor-Doctor Nguyen Duc Dan, who is also the life partner of Associate Professor-Doctor Tran Thi Ngoc Lang.
"Southern Vietnamese" is a collection of research works by Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang on the Southern dialect in comparison with Northern, Central, and national vocabulary in general. In her articles, the author analyzes and explains linguistic phenomena in a thorough and fascinating way.
The book is divided into three parts: Part 1 focuses on analyzing and explaining the differences in lexical and semantic phenomena between the North and South; Part 2 is a collection of linguistic data, the main word groups in the Southern dialect; Part 3 consists of scattered articles on language, analyzing literary works by Ho Bieu Chanh, Son Nam, and Nguyen Ngoc Tu to further clarify the interesting characteristics of the Southern dialect and writing style, ensuring scientific accuracy while being rich in imagery and emotion, reflecting the author's subtle perception and love for language - especially Vietnamese in the South.
In September 2024, Tre Publishing House organized the program "Conversations with the Authors of the Rich and Beautiful Vietnamese Language Book Series" at Ho Chi Minh City Book Street with the participation of 5 authors: Professor-Doctor Nguyen Duc Dan, Associate Professor-Doctor Trinh Sam, Associate Professor-Doctor Tran Thi Ngoc Lang, journalist Duong Thanh Truyen and poet Le Minh Quoc.
After the program, in a private interview with a reporter from SGGP newspaper, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang said that after "Southern Vietnamese," she plans to write another book about reduplicated words. According to her, reduplicated words are a distinctive feature of the Vietnamese language. Just open a book like "Chinh Phu Ngam" or "Truyen Kieu," and you'll see that no translation into any other language could be as good as Vietnamese. "It's good because it's Vietnamese, and it has many reduplicated words. When translated into another language, the rhymes wouldn't be as accurate as in the case of six-eight syllable poetry, and then there are the reduplicated words," Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang shared.
Sadly, the book was never published before Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang passed away.
The body of Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Lang is laid in state at 390/2 Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street (Ward 4, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City). The embalming ceremony took place at 0:00 on May 18th, and the funeral procession began at 8:00 on May 19th. Afterwards, the body will be cremated at the Binh Hung Hoa Crematorium.
