The International Letter Writing Competition is organized annually by the Universal Postal Union (UPU). In Vietnam, the UPU International Letter Writing Competition is jointly organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Education and Training , the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Vietnam Writers Association, the Vietnam Post Corporation, and the Thiếu niên Tiền phong & Nhi đồng Newspaper. 2024 is a very special year for the UPU International Letter Writing Competition as it coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union's continuous efforts to connect and serve generations of people worldwide for over eight generations.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Bui Hoang Phuong assessed that the UPU Letter Writing Competition is a beneficial and meaningful activity that has accompanied students for many years, not only helping them develop their writing skills; enriching their thinking sophistication, connecting friendships with friends around the world, and giving them more opportunities to understand the role of the postal service in social life.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Bui Hoang Phuong delivered a speech at the launching ceremony of the competition.

"Furthermore, this Letter Writing Contest has great significance and a profound impact on students and the younger generation, as it allows them to reflect on pressing international issues and current affairs of the United Nations, express their voices, and offer solutions from their own perspectives," said the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications.

According to Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Bui Hoang Phuong, in the 35 years that Vietnam has participated in the UPU International Letter Writing Competition, Vietnam has won 17 international awards, including 5 international awards for students from Da Nang city (with 8 national awards submitted by students from Da Nang city). This is not only a source of pride for individual students, but also an honor for Vietnamese students in general.

Representatives from the Department of Information and Communications and the Department of Education and Training of the city presented flowers to the Organizing Committee and the Judging Panel of the Competition.

The 54th UPU International Letter Writing Competition, 2025, has the theme: “IMAGINE YOU ARE THE OCEAN. Write a letter to someone explaining why and how they should take good care of you.”

The competition's theme is linked to the goal of "Conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources" within the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. With this year's theme, students were able to embody the ocean to highlight the issues they are facing, most notably marine pollution.

Children can use their vivid imagination and boundless creativity to talk, share their thoughts, remind people about the role of the ocean, and share specific solutions and actions to protect the ocean, sea, and marine ecosystems; demonstrating human responsibility, especially that of the younger generation, in nature conservation for sustainable development.
