In the early days of winter, Ban Viet Lake in Dam Thuy commune, Cao Bang province, dons a new, vibrant coat. This is the time when the maple forests along the lake simultaneously turn a deep red, creating a spectacular natural landscape that attracts tourists on their journey to explore Ban Gioc Waterfall.
Located just about 3 km from Ban Gioc Waterfall, Ban Viet Lake is the largest artificial lake in the province, covering an area of approximately 5 hectares. Unlike the grandeur of nearby famous tourist destinations, this place offers a peaceful and tranquil space where visitors can fully immerse themselves in nature.
The beauty of the maple forest in the changing of the leaves.
The most striking feature of Ban Viet Lake is its rich surrounding vegetation, most notably the fragrant maple trees, also known locally as "sau" trees. These trees grow scattered throughout many forests in Cao Bang , but are most densely concentrated in this area.

When winter arrives, the maple leaves begin their magical journey of color change, from green to yellow and then to vibrant red. The red hues of the leaves are reflected on the calm surface of the lake, creating a vivid watercolor painting. This is considered the most beautiful time of year to visit Ban Viet Lake.
Ms. Le Minh Hanh from Bac Ninh shared: "The photos online already looked beautiful, but the colors of the leaves are even more vibrant and clear when you get there. The lake is a good size, the road to get there is easy to navigate, and from the edge of the lake you can observe the entire strip of maple trees changing color."

Things to try at Ban Viet Lake
Besides being a scenic spot, Ban Viet Lake also offers many interesting activities for tourists who love to explore.
Take a boat ride and enjoy the scenery.
In the afternoon, when the breeze is gentle and the lake is calm, visitors can enjoy rafting or boating to fully appreciate the beauty of the landscape. Gliding smoothly across the water, you will feel the absolute tranquility of the mountains and forests and admire the maple forest from a completely different perspective.

Take a walk and camp by the lake.
The flat dirt road around the lake is an ideal walking route, suitable even for those with little hiking experience. Hoang Duc Long, a tourist from Thai Nguyen, said it's also a very quiet spot for overnight camping. However, visitors should prepare enough warm clothing as nighttime temperatures in the highlands drop quite low.
