Unexploded World War II bomb discovered, Hong Kong evacuated 6,000 people

Hong Kong police evacuated 6,000 people from a crowded residential and commercial area after construction workers discovered an unexploded World War II bomb.

NBC News quoted police as saying that the bomb, weighing about 454 kg, was discovered in the Quarry Bay neighborhood of Hong Kong (China) on September 19. The police department's bomb disposal unit believed the bomb was "still in good condition", so it had to "urgently evacuate" people in 18 residential and commercial buildings.

Roads in Quarry Bay were temporarily closed as bomb squads prepared to remove the bomb.

According to local newspaper The Standard , from around 6pm on September 19, authorities checked every house in the area to ensure all residents had left the affected buildings.

According to India Times, previously, in June 2025, more than 20,000 people had to evacuate the city center of Cologne in Germany after three unexploded bombs from World War II were discovered.

The source said three bombs, including two weighing nearly 2 tons and one weighing nearly 1 ton, were found in the Deutz area and were successfully neutralized by bomb disposal experts the same day.

In 2018, a 1,000-pound bomb was discovered in Hong Kong's Wan Chai district, forcing the evacuation of 1,200 people. The operation to defuse the bomb took about 20 hours.

In 2014, construction workers also discovered a bomb weighing more than 900 kg in the Happy Valley area of ​​Hong Kong.
