In the search for non-drug support solutions, a new study published in the scientific journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine has found a great juice to help lower high blood pressure in the elderly.
The study was conducted by a team of experts at the University of Exeter (UK) to investigate the relationship between beetroot juice, oral microbiota and blood pressure in older adults.
The study involved 75 healthy adults, including 39 under 30 and 36 in their 60s and 70s. Each participant underwent two two-week phases: one in which they drank nitrate-rich beetroot juice twice a day, and another in which they drank a placebo juice that had the nitrates removed. Between the two phases was a two-week “washout” period to remove any residual effects from the previous phase.
The authors analyzed changes in oral microbiota before and after each phase. At the same time, they monitored each participant's blood pressure.

Results have found that beetroot juice rich in nitrates can help lower blood pressure in older adults.
Specifically, after 2 weeks of using beetroot juice, the group of older people recorded a significant reduction in blood pressure, while there was no effect in the group of younger people, according to the science news site Scitech Daily.
The older group had higher average blood pressure at the start of the study, and it decreased after drinking the nitrate-rich beetroot juice, but not after taking the placebo.
They also had significantly altered oral microbiota: Prevotella bacteria – which are linked to inflammatory responses – decreased, while beneficial bacteria such as Neisseria increased, compared with those taking the placebo.
In the young group, oral microbiota composition also changed similarly after drinking nitrate-rich beetroot juice, but there was no effect on lowering blood pressure.
The findings showed that beetroot juice inhibited some of the harmful bacteria in the mouth, helping to restore a healthier balance. When the balance is tilted towards harmful bacteria, the body’s ability to convert dietary nitrates (found in vegetables) into nitric oxide is reduced. Nitric oxide is important for maintaining the flexibility and health of blood vessels and plays a central role in regulating blood pressure.
Dietary recommendations for older adults
Study author Professor Anni Vanhatalo, of the University of Exeter, said: “While a diet rich in nitrates has health benefits, older people produce less nitric oxide and also tend to have higher blood pressure. Encouraging older people to consume more nitrate-rich vegetables could have significant long-term health benefits. In addition to beetroot, many vegetables such as spinach, arugula, fennel, celery and lettuce are also rich in nitrates.
Scientists hope this research will pave the way for more effective nutritional interventions to promote healthy aging.
