Developing effective economic models in agriculture and rural areas in Gio Linh

Over the years, the Farmers' Association of Gio Linh district has always paid attention to building and developing effective economic models for members and farmers. With the attention and active support of the association at all levels, farmers' association members in the whole district have promoted the virtues of diligence, dynamism and creativity, boldly invested capital, applied science and technology... to successfully build many effective economic models, increase income, create jobs for many workers, contributing to making the appearance of the homeland more and more prosperous.

Chairman of the Gio Linh District Farmers' Association Nguyen Huu Chinh said that the District Farmers' Association actively propagates, supports and mobilizes members and farmers to build agricultural development models in the direction of specialized production associated with the potential and advantages of the locality; develops new types of plants and animals with high economic value such as beekeeping, planting vetiver trees, raising snails, etc.

Focus on improving the quality of support services for farmers, consulting, vocational training, supporting loans for production development, participating in guiding farmers to develop collective economic models. In the past 6 years, 430 training courses have been organized for more than 17,500 members to participate; the training courses have content close to the practical production situation of the locality such as caring for and exploiting rubber latex, caring for pepper plants, using pesticides, microbial and organic fertilizers on rice, peanuts, etc.

Mobilize members to effectively implement the policy of land consolidation, land accumulation, mixed garden renovation, conversion and application of scientific and technical advances, integration of models into production, and mobilize members to register and respond to the program of building highly effective fields per unit area. Encourage and support fishermen to upgrade boats, fishing gear, apply scientific and technical advances, new technologies in fishing, aquaculture, and seafood, and improve fishing gear to increase fishing productivity.

The District Farmers' Association coordinates with relevant agencies to support poor farming households with plants and breeds to develop production. At the same time, it focuses on investing in building highly feasible projects, strongly developing food crops, short-term industrial crops, focusing on developing farm economic models, hilly areas, coastal sand areas, VAC models, growing clean vegetables, growing flowers...; participating in afforestation projects, strongly developing livestock in each farmer's household in terms of scale, quantity and quality towards commodity production.

Focus on investing in capital, science and technology, effectively implementing projects, and expanding them locally for farmers to learn. Promote good coordination with related units to organize technical training for farmers, expand cooperative models, cooperative groups, and professional associations across all localities. In the past 5 years, 52 models of all kinds have been invested and supported, worth over 1 billion VND.

The models have been effective, helping farmers gradually access new technical knowledge and technology, adapt to the market economy, improve their lives, and increase their income. In the past 5 years, the association has established 1 cooperative and 20 cooperative groups in carpentry, afforestation, beekeeping, clean vegetable growing, organic rice, etc.; at the same time, it continues to strengthen existing groups and associations such as livestock breeding, cultivation, and agricultural extension clubs.

Implementing the motto of "mobilizing and supporting", the District Farmers' Association actively seeks loan sources for cooperatives to promote production and business, and links with companies and units to find stable outlets for agricultural products.

Currently, in the district, the Central Farmers Support Fund is lending 6 projects, with 63 participating households, with a total capital of more than 2.25 billion VND, including the projects: raising buffalo in Gio Hai commune, processing seafood in Gio Viet commune, producing organic rice in Gio My commune, raising eel in cages and growing clean vegetables in Phong Binh commune, raising cows in Gio An commune. The Provincial Farmers Support Fund has lent more than 1 billion VND, with 4 projects, with 18 participating households.

Of which, there is 1 aquatic and seafood processing project in Cua Viet town, 1 organic rice project in Gio Quang commune, 2 commercial chicken farming projects in Gio Chau and Trung Giang communes. The district's farmer support fund currently has 2,250 million VND, lending to 91 households. The linkage with banks has also been promoted. Lien Viet Post Bank's credit is 13 billion VND, with 13 groups lending to 356 households; borrowing through the Social Policy Bank is 139 billion VND with 69 groups and 2,596 households; borrowing through the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development is 208 billion VND, with 29 groups and 8,138 households. Thereby, there are favorable conditions for farmers to build and develop diverse economic models as well as expand the scale and quality of effective economic models.

In 2023, the whole district had 6,600 households registering for the title of good farmer households, of which 2,960 households achieved the title of good farmer households at all levels, of which 13 households were at the central level, 60 households at the provincial level, 235 households at the district level, and 2,652 households at the grassroots level.

Throughout the district, there have been many typical economic models such as: growing flowers and ornamental plants in Gio Chau commune; large-scale livestock farms in Gio Quang commune; raising snails in Gio My commune; exploiting and processing seafood in Gio Viet commune, Cua Viet town...; successfully building brands of fish, dried squid, fish sauce in Gio Viet commune, Gio Hai, Cua Viet town; watercress in Gio An; flowers in Gio Chau; safe vegetables in Trung Hai; watermelon in Phong Binh; organic rice in Gio My, Gio Quang...

From the results achieved in building and developing economic models, farmers' associations at all levels have increasingly affirmed their position and made many important contributions to the development of Gio Linh homeland.
