Dr. Tran Nam Dung, Vice Principal of the Gifted High School, Ho Chi Minh City National University, shared the above at the discussion "Learning & asking in the AI storm - Preserving humanity in the optimization era" and launching the book "The Last Class" held at the Southern Center for Education and Training Development on the afternoon of November 15.

Assigning homework is not a trick.

Dr. Tran Nam Dung said that when he teaches, even in extra classes, he often lets students take the initiative to learn. For him, teaching many lessons and much content in a lesson is not as important as what students absorb.

When students make mistakes, many teachers reflexively say, “Wrong, get off” to save time. But for Mr. Dung, this is an opportunity, a pedagogical situation to help students correct their work to help them become more confident and not be afraid of making mistakes.

In particular, Dr. Tran Nam Dung emphasized that teachers must assign homework to students within their ability to solve in terms of method and time.

“There are many teachers who give a whole exercise book, 50 math problems, which clearly students cannot do in terms of time. Students do not only study one subject, they also study many other subjects.

In each lesson, I only give students a maximum of 3 exercises, one of which is difficult. This difficult exercise will have instructions and encouragement such as: This exercise is difficult, no one in the previous class could do it, if you can do it, you are excellent,” Mr. Dung said.

According to Mr. Dung, teachers do not assign homework to trick students or to receive answers from them. The answers are not important, but the most important thing is the process of finding the solution, which helps train the thinking to solve problems in life.

Therefore, to help "keep oneself" in learning before technology, teachers need to help students determine their learning goals and motivations.

Teachers slow down, students must be the ones to find knowledge.

At the seminar, experts and education managers said that the biggest difficulty today is not in teaching knowledge, but in how to create motivation for students to learn.

Mr. Ngo Thanh Nam, Principal of B.School, commented that technology helps teaching and learning happen faster and easier, but also makes teachers tend to be "lazier" in investing in lectures that reach students.

Even the process of grading papers using technology leaves teachers little time to reflect on students’ work. Therefore, according to him, teachers need to proactively “slow down” in their approach to AI.

Mr. Nam believes that building a study plan is essential in motivating students.

Learning should be fun first and foremost. When students are happy, they want to participate actively and limit unwanted behaviors. When designing lessons, teachers should try to put themselves in the shoes of the learner and answer, "If I were you, would I be interested?"

Students need to feel the meaning and value of learning, and be able to apply it to life. To do that, don't let the whole class be all students sitting and the teacher doing the work.

"Teachers need to step back so that students can experience and practice. Students must be the ones to find knowledge, not teachers who find it and give it to them. The most difficult thing is that teachers must respect students' opinions," said Mr. Ngo Thanh Nam.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, Director of Pathway School, said that the biggest difficulty today is motivating students to study when there are too many temptations and more fun than studying.

Ms. Huyen pointed out some interesting principles in learning such as discovering new things; learning is useful and learners can apply and practice...

To motivate students, teachers need to understand their needs, such as what issues they are interested in and what phenomena are affecting them. And students must have the right to decide for themselves how to learn, ask questions and find answers.

Ms. Huyen informed that in her school, the application of technology framework for teachers and digital capacity for students is done very carefully. In particular, attention is paid to the peace and healthy development of teachers and students.

Dr. Hoang Anh Duc, author of the book “The Last Class”, stated the core view of learning must be “learning must ask”. Students must be the ones to ask questions about what they want to learn so that they will have the intention to find the answer. When the teacher asks a question, students will learn to cope in order to answer the teacher’s question.

When students are proactive in learning, asking questions and making their own classroom rules, the teacher's job will be much more effective and easier.

In particular, Dr. Hoang Anh Duc emphasized that each child not only needs toys or clothes, but above all, the right to be curious.

He said: "It is extremely difficult for a teacher to inspire students. I cannot do it either because even finding inspiration for myself is extremely difficult. The important thing is that teachers need to create a space and environment where students can ask questions, be allowed to make mistakes and learn from their mistakes."
