Prevent and combat cross-border smuggling

An Giang province has a long border with Cambodia, which is favorable for legal trade. However, this is also a factor for smugglers to take advantage of hidden trails and border areas to transport illegal goods.

Border Guards arrest subject transporting 22.5kg of synthetic drugs

Many major smuggling cases were discovered.

In the first quarter of 2025, An Giang provincial authorities discovered and handled many large smuggling cases, including 372.5 kg of firecrackers, 12.2 kg of gold and 22.5 kg of crystal meth. According to the assessment of the Provincial Steering Committee 389, the smuggling of gold and foreign currency is increasing by 15% compared to the same period last year. Changes in international tax policies, especially US taxes on imported goods, have caused a sharp increase in the demand for smuggling gold, electronics, food and pharmaceuticals across the border, creating a major challenge for border control.

Typically, the Provincial Border Guard arrested 1 case, 1 subject transporting 372.5 kg of firecrackers in the area of Mieu Ngoi Lon canal (group 1, Ba Bai hamlet, Vinh Te commune, Chau Doc city); arrested 1 case, 1 subject transporting 12 gold bars, total weight 12.2 kg in the area of Mieu Ngoi Nho canal, about 400m from the border; arrested 1 case, 1 subject transporting 22.5 kg of synthetic drugs in the area of Cham ferry (group 13, Binh Di hamlet, Khanh Binh commune, An Phu district)...

In addition, the smuggling of essential consumer goods such as fake milk, medicine and pharmaceuticals has also increased. The authorities have seized and handled according to regulations at the border gate more than 3,000 fake milk products and 1,000 pills of unknown origin, contributing to protecting public health and preventing the development of the market for fake and poor quality goods.

Colonel Bui Tan An (Deputy Director of the Provincial Police) said that despite positive results, An Giang still faces many difficulties, especially in the context of increasingly sophisticated methods and tricks of the subjects. They constantly change their methods and tricks of transportation to deal with the authorities, using modern, high-tech means to transport smuggled goods across the border. When passing through the An Giang side, they quickly transport and disperse them to other places. This makes the control and detection of illegal goods more difficult. At the same time, with a large area and people living near the border, the subjects often take advantage of unofficial openings to transport illegal goods, causing difficulties in inspection and control.

Prevention and containment solutions

To strengthen prevention and control of smuggling and illegal transportation across the border, the Provincial Steering Committee 389 will drastically implement many solutions in the coming time. Accordingly, strengthen leadership and direction from the province to the grassroots; prevent smuggling right from the beginning. The directions of the Government and the National Steering Committee 389 will be drastically implemented, creating consensus in the entire political system and the people. Strengthen functional forces, strengthen inter-sectoral coordination; train, coach, and improve professional capacity. Strengthen inspection, supervision, and coordination between agencies, and promptly handle arising cases.

In particular, the province will promote the application of technology in border control, such as: Investing in modern technology (surveillance camera systems, flycams and screening equipment) at border gates and smuggling hotspots. Technology plays an important role in improving the capacity to detect and prevent smuggling, especially sophisticated transportation methods. The province will promote propaganda and raise public awareness of the harmful effects of smuggling, counterfeit goods and poor quality goods. Propaganda programs focus oneducating the identification of counterfeit goods, calling on the community to actively participate in the fight against crime. The Provincial People's Committee will continue to promote cooperation with the Cambodian government in the prevention and combat of cross-border crimes, in order to improve the effectiveness of coordination in joint patrols and information sharing.

In order for the work of preventing and combating smuggling in An Giang to continue to be highly effective, the province proposed that the National Steering Committee 389 and the Government support modern equipment; support funding and train human resources for the province's functional forces to improve the effectiveness of preventing and combating smuggling. At the same time, continue to promote cooperation with Cambodia, deploy inter-sectoral cooperation mechanisms to prevent cross-border smuggling.
