The planning aims to develop Phu Quoc City into an island city; a high-quality tourism and resort service center, attracting domestic and foreign tourists; an island city meeting class I urban standards; a regional and international trade and service center... With that goal, the planning orientation is that by 2030, urban land will reach more than 9,900 hectares (an increase of more than 4,300 hectares compared to present); and increase to 14,700ha by 2040. Orientation for multi-center development, urban chain, with 13 development areas, such as: Duong Dong, Truong beach, Ong Lang beach - Cua Can, Vong beach, Sao beach, An Thoi... Notably, in the field of transportation, this locality will expand Phu Quoc International Airport by 2030 to reach a capacity of 10 million passengers/year (currently only 4 million passengers/year), then up to 18 million passengers/year (linked to the duty-free zone); invest in new and upgrade a number of seaports to welcome large ships, international cruise ships to access the island; invest in completing traffic routes around the island... Regarding cultural - sports and entertainment works, there will be investment in golf courses (Ong Lon beach - Cua Can area, Khem beach - Ong Doi cape area, western coastal area); horse racing track (Duong To commune); casino, sea sports... Besides, there will be investment in more hospitals, schools... |

New vision and expectations At the conference, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nghi - Minister of Construction, said that every year, Phu Quoc's total budget revenue reaches more than 7,000 billion VND, an increase of 260 times compared to 2004, accounting for nearly 50% of Kien Giang province's budget revenue. Minister Nguyen Thanh Nghi said that this Phu Quoc planning is the legal basis for development and investment attraction. The organization and implementation of the planning must ensure the viewpoints, principles, goals, characteristics and comply with the orientation of architectural and landscape space development approved by the Prime Minister. Localities need to promptly review, adjust and approve zoning plans, detailed plans and urban designs. "The process of implementing the new planning announced today must strictly protect the area of forests, natural rivers and streams, coastal spaces... in accordance with regulations. Kien Giang needs to focus on researching and proposing the development of mechanisms and policies to mobilize and use the most appropriate financial resources to invest in the sustainable development of Phu Quoc City, harmonizing economic development and environmental protection, ensuring national defense and security," said Mr. Nghi. |
Planning of future development areas of Phu Quoc.
In the Phu Quoc planning, the Prime Minister assigned the People's Committee of Kien Giang province to be responsible for reviewing and evaluating investment projects, urban areas, residential areas... in accordance with regulations, ensuring that illegal projects are not legalized (if any). Localities review and adjust approved projects or investment policies according to the new planning; if the project is not suitable, it must be clarified and handled according to current authority and regulations, and illegal projects must not be legalized. Projects and works that are being reviewed and handled according to the conclusions of inspections, audits, investigations, and execution of judgments (if any) can only be continued when the conclusions and recommendations are completed and approved by competent authorities...
Kien Giang province is also assigned to develop mechanisms and policies related to investment, finance, and land to implement priority investment projects.
Mr. Huynh Quang Hung - Chairman of Phu Quoc City People's Committee pledged to make every effort to coordinate with authorities at all levels to "awaken" potentials and advantages, unleash resources, and build a healthy investment environment for Phu Quoc City. The city promised to organize and manage planning well and make every effort to ensure sustainable local development in the new era.
